MY astra is guzzling fuel !!

    Hello,

I have a 16valve Astra with the ecotech engine. The last week has cost me a fortune in juice as it is doing about half the mpg it was . The car starts well and runs like a dream...... it's the fuel problem that's doing my head in ! I am definitely USING fuel as opposed to LOSING it, there are no leaks.

Can anyone help.....or do you know a man who can ?

Vauxhall ( OPEL ) Astra 1999 16v Ecotech Engine. 51.000 miles. New water pump and head gasket, valves , etc 2000 miles ago. Engine type X16XEL

    Cheers, !!

p.s........any Household electricity problems ? Try me !!

Check your tyre pressures, under inflated tyres can result in high fuel consumption.

get it whacked into a local dealer and ask them to put it on an emission machine, to see if it's running ultra rich.

Sounds to me like the THERMOSTAT was missed out when the head gasket was done....so it never gets to temperature!

How long before it blows really hot air through the vents from a cold start up?

I'm with Zak. A friend had the EXACT same problem after his head gasket was changed a few months back ( on a volvo, mind ).

Household electrics eh.... hmmmm. Might take you up on that shortly

If not a temp sender then it could be the Lambda probe of MAF but normaly you would get a loss in power when they are out of range.
