    Replacing CD player / radio

    Hi folks,

A few quick questions for you as some 'lovely person' broke the window of our bog standard mk1 ford focus and stole the bog standard ford CD player in it yesterday (@#@#!?!, etc, etc). Now I can see a lot of them on ebay - Ford 6000 is the one we need - but wanted to ask if:

    1) Is this the best place to buy one? Price is a strong consideration - already paid £60 excess to get the window fixed - but I also don't want to fund criminal chav b*stards like the one(s) that stole ours.

    2) Any chance I can pick one up from the scrappers for less than the £70 - £80 they go for on ebay?

    3) Are these as easy to fit as I suspect? Looks like you just connect up the plugs and slot it in? Any worries with regards to the code?

Scrappie would be a good idea, ebay should be fine as well, as long as there is 100% feedback. Either way make sure you have the key sold with the item! Or you could buy yourself an aftermarket one and have done with it?

I was gonna suggest maybe now's a good chance for an upgrade to a nice head unit that plays MP3s etc?

I thought about that but the missus is a bit of a luddite and wouldn't use the extra features... Having said that "one day it will be mine" as I've recently passed my test and so will inherit the old car as and when the need arises for two separate cars... I looked at ebay for this option as well and appear to need an ISO converter for the focus to a standard set... After that I just need a double din unit (or a blanking plate + single din unit) ?

the ford jobbies aren't bad, and they integrate nicely into the car.. ebay prices are probably about right.

i might actually have a 6000 kicking round back at my rentals (came out of a '99 mondeo) but not sure.. and probably couldnt get it in time for you wanting one..

I've got one up in my attic that I'm not using. The security code should still be in the car's owner's guide.

I thought they were going for about £40 on Ebay?

    Cheers,
    Stephen

Yeah - I thought they were cheaper but £70 seems to be the going rate at the moment ...

And Ford quoted £400 when I asked about 6 months ago. Went through the insurance company and they just stuck a top of the range Pioneer in there instead.

People nick the standard ford stereos for the chip in them. Apparently you can use them to decode Satellite TV and get free sky, but I doubt it actually works.

As I said, I doubt it actually works But I was reliably informed of this by the bloke fitting the new stereo unit, and seen a thread elsewhere recently with the same convo.

I'd get something from caraudiodirect, great company. I bought one on ebay and it was broken (Still trying to get my money back) and it's put me off ebay electronics for a while

a quick google seems to suggest this is an urban myth, steming from the fact that theres a radio station in the states called sky?

who knows, but i'd have to say i doubt it

Doesn't matter if you can do it or not, if people think you can they'll nick the stereo anyway.
