Fragile? Jesus, a mate of mine lamped into another car head on with a combined speed of 70mph+ and walked away without so much as a stiff neck!

But yeah, very, very quick cars. My Clio's not far off the pace of a 172 at the moment. Once the engine's had a few more mods 172s will be a thing of the rear view mirror.

Are they as good as they seem Lowe?

For similar money I could swap my Primera for one.

Just looked on Autotrader and seen a couple of 51 plate 172's. The post 2k1 models look better imho, so anything older than a 51 is the old style.

Did the engines change with the model change or is it purely cosmetic.

What are the trim levels like, I noticed 1/2 Leather in one of the specs.

    Tuneable?

Spec of the 172 is pretty good. All the toys including aircon etc. Seats are gorgeous, half Alcantara/leather jobbies with side impact airbags and all sorts.

Phase 2 has the current shape but shares the same engine. Older Phase 1 was very, very slightly quicker.

They pull well, have an induction note to die for even without an induction kit on and it feels like they rev forever. They're pretty nimble as well, you can really throw them around. The accelerator is a bit odd at first - it's fly by wire so can be a little sensitive at first. You soon get used to it though.

On the downside, some people say the build quality isn't too good on the interior. I think it's not bad but then I've grown up around Renaults so see them as normal.

It's definately worth a test drive Va Va Voom is
awesome fun and bring a smile to 90% of faces. Whether you'll want to buy one though is another matter mainly cos of insurance.

Oops, just noticed the tuning bit.

Yes, the engine's tuneable but it's already pretty well tuned. Depending on how lucky you are the engine power will range from 150-170bhp. Some are better than others. Obviously you're more likely to see increases on poorer engines as they have headwork and stuff done to them as it brings them up to a more acceptable level of performance.

Hillpower have already got a fair amount of stuff available for the 172. What Nick doesn't know about n/a Renault lumps isn't worth knowing. He isn't cheap, but the stuff he sells WORKS. It's all race proven.

Ive got a 172 and ive had it 2months now. Every time i get out the car i have a big grin on my face, its just so enjoyable to drive. I was going to choose the Cup but i wanted the comforts
Mine came with 1/2leather and alcantara, traction control and ESP, Automatic Xenon headlams, automatic wipers, Cruise Control (Only got added in the later June03 onwards 172's). Mines Iceburg Silver and i think it looks great because its very 'subtle' and not OTT. I do get a few 'amazed' looks from people when they see me fly past
If you have any questions just ask.
Just noticed you've signed up to 'cliosport' Im on there too and some of the lads are very helpful, others not

Compared with what, any other cars?

Nothing wrong with the interiors that you wont find present in another nations cars. Its unfair to generalise... though of course if you had a french card they would all be well ace right
