Level crossings campaign shifts into Top Gear
What happens to a 'safe' family car on a level crossing when a train hits it at high speed? Viewers of Top Gear will find out, this Sunday, when it broadcasts a unique event set up by Network Rail to highlight the dangers of level crossing misuse.

For the first time in over a decade, a staged crash involving a train was carried out in Britain. The event has a serious purpose – to graphically show to motorists the consequences of running the risk at level crossings.

Overseen by Jeremy Clarkson, a people carrier is parked on a level crossing on an operational part of the railway in rural Lincolnshire. Safely supervised by Network Rail specialists, an unmanned, 107-tonne, Class 31 diesel locomotive is set off by remote control. It hurtles towards the car at speeds of approaching 70mph. The aftermath is shocking.

The event is one of the high points of a £3m awareness campaign by Network Rail under the 'Don't run the risk' banner. This has included nationwide and local advertising including spots on television and radio and more than one million households were targeted to receive information leaflets. This is the most extensive public safety campaign ever run by the rail industry.

The show is broadcast on BBC TWO, 8pm Sunday 4th Feb
Should be interesting

Proves that there is call for increased safety awareness though.

After seeing this episode, I doubt I'll be parking on a level crossing any time soon.

Wonder if they'll test it the way they did with the <£100 car challenge... ie, in it...

To be honest, I've never understood people who play with Level Crossings. It's a bit like playing with a live socket - you just don't do it do you?

Dawin in action...

I missed the first 20 mins or so.

With the current trend for playing with level crossings, and a couple of girls killed the other day I guess they pulled it for sensitivity reasons. Fingers crossed later in the series we'll see some train/car interfacing..

I guy i used to know survived being hit by a train (not sure if it was a level crossing) about 20 years ago. Luckily, the train hit the side of the car at the back. The car was thrown through the air about 40 feet and witnesses said it actually somersaulted (barrel rolled in the air). It knocked him clean out but he survived with no serious injury. In an other amazing stroke of luck, the next two vehicles to come down the road were an ambulance and police car on their way to another minor incident!!! a Lucky guy indeed.
