    Re: Project Cunning Plan!

I bought the same (or almost the same) AOpen case a (long) while back - can't for the life of me remember what I did with it though!

    Edit:

In fact it was the H340A I used to have, back in the days of USB ADSL modems I got a PCI card based one and used it as a firewall / router (running kerio winroute) and other stuff... From October 2003:

    Re: Project Cunning Plan!

Ah, that thread takes me back - the good old Duron 1400/1600/1800. Brilliant budget chips. Back in the day I built a rig with the 1600, a Syntax ATX board, and probably a Geforce 4 MX or some such. It was so cheap that when I bricked the board with a bad BIOS flash I just binned it and bought a new one (less than £20 for a full ATX board, iirc). Those were the days

The H360 is a great case, and I was fascinated to discover the intention was to have the CPU cooler vent to the side, through the PSU. If I can find a suitable cooler (or mod an unsuitable one ) I'd like to get back to that set-up: it worked magnificently on the P4 3.2GHz HT I stuck in that build eventually. Might consider a new TFX PSU soon as well - as good as the FSP unit is, it's about 9 years old now ... can't have much life left in it ...

    Re: Project Cunning Plan!

Heh, nothing like resurrecting an ancient thread that everyone thought had died

Well, Zombie thread, Zombie project! The modded case for Project Cunning Plan did eventually get dumped, but most of the other components somehow managed to hold on!

So, over Christmas, with stuff on my wishlist in the Steam sale, I decided it was time to set up a dedicated gaming PC again and install/play the remaining unplayed games in my Steam library (part of an agreement I made a few years ago that I wouldn't buy any more games until I'd at least installed and tried every game I already owned). My original plan was to go simple, with some air-cooled components including a lovely 7900GTO I still have kicking around, and it would've worked BUT for one game - minimum GPU specs required an 8800GT or 4850. Now, I also have a 4850 lying around but remembered that it was having serious problems last time i used it in a build, so it looked like I was stuck: until I remembered:

Now, the air-cooled 8800GTX in the case had since been sold, but if you look closely you'll see there's a second 8800GTX with the waterblock already installed - and that was still in my box-o-bits! With the original mobo/CPU/RAM still kicking around too, Project Cunning Plan was back in business!!!

Of course, things didn't go as smoothly or as straight-forwardly as one might hope ... but that's a story for another post. For now, rejoice Hexus: the Cunning Plan is back in business

You still got the chopped up case, or are you going to have to start again?

I know you haven't asked, but I do have 2 x MSI GTX660Ti Power Edition kicking around that I could do with selling on. Would you be interested in one?

Probs sell each for around £70 delivered.

A while ago. I downsized my case and picked up a single R9 290x when the 390x came out.

Sadly not - got ditched in the last house move around a year ago. I'm still pondering whether I'll do another proper mod - the current hardware isn't really .. "worthy" of the hassle IMNSHO. That said, the majority of the WC kit will transfer between machines without any real issue (realistically I'd just need a GPU block) so the possibility remains that in the future I'll build a new gaming rig to put under water...

With water blocks? Or air cooled? A better GPU is tempting, but a 660 Ti would be somewhat ... unbalanced ... with the rest of the current rig

    EDIT:

With all those comments to reply to I forgot why I came in here in the first place!

Another game on my wishlist came up on Steam sale yesterday, so I decided last night was the time to finish off installing and playing my Steam library. I ended up with two problems that prevented me completing my goal.

Firstly, when I flicked the power switch I was greeted with a nasty gurgly sound, and looking down i noticed that there was no longer any water in my ghetto reservoir, and the pump was sitting in about 3" of water! Fortunately I'd planned for the possibility that my really dodgy sealing job wasn't up to holding water and placed the pump & res out of the case in a plastic tub, so I just flicked the PC off again, refilled the res from the tub, and was good to go - bit disconcerting though. Probably need to invest in an actual res that actually holds water

Secondly, and more problematically, I started off a game download and it crawled along at ~ 200KB/s. Checking speedtest from my tablet and laptop, it turned out that the internet was genuinely that slow last night. In the end I managed to get all of Darksiders downloaded, but that didn't finish until gone 11pm; no time for playing at that point. Still, that one game ready for a play session whilst another downloads!

Its aircooled on a custom PCB I believe. I will be sticking them in a sale thread as soon as I stop being lazy but thought you might want first dibs

    Re: Project Cunning Plan!

Ah, I'll leave it in that case, but thanks for the offer! I'm pretty sure I'll stick with this rig for a few months (important life stuff to sort out) then start plotting another case mod to get all this stuff in. Plus now I've actually got round to rigging everything up and found out how easy it was to build the loop, I'll have a lot less worries about sorting it out the next time
