    HD vibration in 3.5" bays

How can you reduce the amount of vibration when a hard drive is in the 3.5" bay, the plates are metal so any HD vibration will be transmitted to the case.

Also for 5.25" mounting is there anything to mount HD in there? I know of 3-in-1 module but haven't seen much for 5.25" 2 bay unit

    (Not my image)

I've mounted my HDDs using elastic and they're a hell of a lot quieter now!

Why not? As long as you do it properly it will be.

As for alternatives, rubber grommets probably. A lot of cases have them supplied already though, and it isn't nearly as good. You can mount a single 3.5" drive in a 5.25" slot with anti-vibration mounts.

Don't just hang them from elastic, make sure that the elastic is connected at the top and bottom of where you want the HDDs to be, and they won't really move all that much..

My HDDs have been like that for well over a year, so long as your HDDs are off when you're moving the case, it'll be absolutely fine.

It's sort of like a suspension setup for them

There's a difference between bungee cord and a pack of elastic bands from the corner shop. If you get something good enough it's not going to suddenly hurl your hard drives across the room after 3 weeks. Maybe a few years, but I'd think you'd have moved on by then.

also in a matx case don't really have space for that sort of layout.

Re: HD vibration in 3.5" bays

Yes you can get anti-vibration 5.25" to 3.5" mounts
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/scyth...on-benefits%29
It's only one 3.5" HDD per 5.25" bay, a 5.25" bay is not big enough to fit two 3.5" HDD's in it.
Most of the sharkoon cases use this system so they only have 5.25" bays and a load of adaptors.

You can get rubber grommeted screws for drives to cut down on the vibration, however there are issues with them in a normal case cage.
1- The screws holes are not big enough for the addition of a grommet, you'd have to use a drill to expand the hole.
2- width, most cages don't have the additional width needed for the grommet.

Cases that use grommeted hard drive mounts as stock have wider cages and are designed to accommodate the grommets.

Suspension as Hoonigan has suggested is the best way to eliminate hard drive vibration.
The main causes for elastic degradation is UV light, chemical reaction with types of grease/oil and hot/cold cycles.
The inside of your pc shouldn't get hot enough to cause rapid degradation unless the elastic is touching the cpu heatsink or gpu heatsink.
Case manufactures have used elastic suspension for drives before (last case I know of to do it is the antec lanboy)

So basically is there something you can just go out and buy that will damp vibrations in a 3.5" cage? No
Can you do it? Yes, but it does involve you actually doing stuff and getting creative.

I also recommend the Scythes, I brought two of them and they work really well.

Wow, can't believe Scan are charging over £7 for these! I brought mine for half the price from them last year!

    Sorbothane.

Search eBay for "flatfeet". Note that the "ultra" variety are intended only for heavy weights.
