Its about time someone said it - the simplest, safe & most cost efficient method.

If you wanted, you could wire a switch into the extension (even use a 'centre off DPDT' switch to give on-off-dim, by using it to swap the voltage from 12 to 5V).

This turned into a really really useful and interesting thread, lots of options.

Does anyone have any recommended retailer/websites for purchasing ready made versions of these options, such as the molex extensaion cable so I can feed it out the back of the PC.

I'm really interested in a battery powered option also as I want to position two lights down stairs and there is no way of using a PSU for this as there is no PC availble.

    Great thread - great advice.

    futher help required.

Easiest thing todo is get a few different coloured cables, some molex males and females, and a molex tool from maplin and stick em together.

Thats just if you're doing a couple really.

i cant see this going horribly wrong, just make sure everything is earthed all the time, only turn the power on after u have checked everything twice.
I touched a bare wire from my cold cathode and.... BOOM, biggest spark i have ever seen in a pc, i'm amazed it didnt do more damge than blow the fuse in the plug!!!

the latest asus motherboards (well my a8n-sli deluxe had one) have a pci thing which allows you to have pass through sata and molex/sata power connectors, by some small pcb that you can just click the connectors in.

but i havent looked at it for a few months so i could be wrong!

Old psu, plug it in, then short the green wire with one of the black ones. The PSU should power on, but its not good to run the psu without something pluged into it.

Try it at your own risk as Ive never tried this.

    CoolerMaster ftw!!!
