It's saying something when Sony feel they have to give away a TV that's worth 5x more than the console just to sell the damned things.
Personally if I'd been a fan buying at midnight launch elsewhere in the country I'd have been very, very peeved.
It's completely out of order that people buying at one location should get such an OTT giveaway whilst other people elsewhere get nothing.
Perhaps if they'd distributed them elsewhere, say 5-10 to giveaway at various locations around the country, and announced their intentions beforehand they'd have had a far better response to the launch.
apart from the announcing there intentions i agree. announcing it would have been the ultimate sign of desperation.
however all other points totally agree

Well see, no, I disagree there.
If they'd announced it they'd make it more like a competition, sort of "5 lucky random people will get a 46" TV"
They could have put tickets inside the boxes or something.
Just giving them away, unannounced, that's desperation.
If the PS3 is so great it should be able to sell all by itself. Why would any company just randomly decide "Hey, let's give away 100 £2500 TV's at the launch"? I wonder how many people were there that actually had the intention of buying a PS3 to begin with?
That's to say, imagine you're with your mate, he's getting a PS3 and you're keeping him company in the queue, the first person in the queue buys theirs and discovers they also get a free TV. Now, as soon as you hear this I guarantee you'd suddenly decide you're going to buy a PS3 as well.
I wonder how many people that were there went through this exact scenario?
im really jealous now!! i desperatly want a hdtv to play my 360 on!!!
i dont know why people have bothered with the ps3 yet, theres nothing on it really worth it yet, any games for it that interest me are already out on other formats
if id of known bout the hdtv giveaway i wouldof gone down though, and then sold the ps3
though the most expensive part for sony would of been paying my taxi fare back to bracknell at that time of night

Just been into town and there are shedloads of PS3s, games and accessories everywhere, chatting to shop staff they've only sold a handful of systems. Looks they may need to cough up some more TVs to shift them!

There's more free stuff coming too, such as the first 475,000 folk to sign up to the PlayStation Network across 41 European countries will get a Blu-ray copy of Casino Royale sent to the address they registered.
Sweet!
And though another HD tv would've been nice, I've already got one so I'm not too bothered...
Edit:
What I want to see is how many Units Sony had available for launch and how many they sold. THAT will be the real indicator of whether this was a successful launch or not.
It's funny how there seemed to be exactly the right number of HDTV's for the exact number of people who were at the launch.
There were supposedly a max of 120 people at the launch, and they gave away 120 TV's. I've never been to a launch where everyone there was buying a unit, most people go with a mate or two just for company
