360 Updates

I don't have my console connected to Xbox live and won't be doing that anytime soon. When I put my Dead Rising disc in for the first time it updated the console to whatever version was required to run the game. Thing that is baffling me though is can you update the console by downloading the updates and burning it onto disc?

I know you can download the backwards compatability updates and update via a burnt cd but can it be done with the dashboard updates etc? If so has someone got a link (its a UK Xbox by the way! ).
