I think the latest update (1.90) does do some form of upscaling, I am not sure.

I have found that it up scales both ordinary original dvd's as well as dvd-r copies etc all really well. They upscale with no problem to 1080p (resolution of 1920x1080 on my 46" screen)

    To quote sony
"Version 1.80 features upscaling of PlayStation® and PlayStation 2 games, and DVD movies up to full 1080p HD resolution when viewed on a compatible HD TV set"

Yeah its upscales fine - not had any problems with "normal" dvds at all. I have played some really old discs in my collection and all is good. Although to be honest once you watch blu-ray you will not be watching as many old dvds as you used to

The below link talks about upscaling on a PS3

Fan noise? your joking right - PS3's are whisper quiet - as a former noisey console owner i can vouch for that believe me

so say we would try and compare an upscaling DVD machine (just an ordinary player and not those £600-£900 machines) to a PS3 if we consider watching DVDs, the occasional Blu-ray discs and ofcourse the games....this might sound to be no-brainer but would you choose DVD player or PS3?

I have a seperate DVD player, basically because it is Multiregion. The PS3 only plays the region you bought it in. I have some Region 1 DVD's which I watch so need the multiregion. If you aren't bothered about this, then just use the PS3, and get the DVD remote for it.

Well the winning point of of the PS3 is convergence. Can do allot more than just play dvd's. Upscalling of dvds would be the same as most standalones i would of thought. The argument for the PS3 becomes interesting when you factor in the many reviews that have faced off the quality of blu-ray play back on the PS3 in comparison to £600+ standalone blu-ray players, and the ps3 wins hands down so yeah it is a no-brainer really overall.

Yes the ps3 is region locked in consideration for normal dvds, but with most blu-ray's being region free and with the exchange rate so good (latest films from £12.99 inc deliv http://www.movietyme.com/catalog/def...8fe8&cPath=355 )
you may consider more blu-rays than normal dvds and upscalling

Heh, agreed. I've watched a lot of DVDs on my girlfriend's father's PS3 and they look sweet. Makes me wish I had a PS3! But alas, computer upgrades and new games keep sidetracking me...

    Re: PS3 DVD upscaling

have to say sony did a really good job upscaling dvd's and even video files things dont get too stretched or blown up too much so it still remains sharp and crisp

    Re: PS3 DVD upscaling

It's just a real shame that they don't allow you to multiregion the DVD playback, especially as the BD & games are multiregion!
