Exclamation PS3 Now Able to Record Digital Video

    http://www.techpowerup.com/?38009#

PS3 owners in Europe will soon be able to enjoy recording digital TV via their consoles. Sony has released a plug-in TV tuner that enables the PS3 to record video. The personal video recording software has been dubbed "PlayTV".

Excellent! Everyone knows that console add-ons are A Great Idea.

Actually, I just thought of something. Will it be able to record while you're playing a game? The time you'd most want to be recording something is if you're using the TV for something else, right...?

If it's not possible to record while you're playing games (and getting bored of one, and changing the game etc) then this is next to useless.

Hell, it's next to useless anyway, given the cost of alternatives. What size is the hard drive in a PS3? And how much will this cost?

Compare that to a standalone freeview-based pvr, price/capacity-wise...

Question is, will the plug in tuner you have to buy for the PS3 be more expensive than cheap digiboxes?

i'd be interested to see the tuner supported under linux (including ps3 linux) - might make the machine a more compelling mythtv box

Interesting move. The 60GB hard drive isn't enough though IMO. I think you would need to upgrade it to at least 160GB which is in line with normal HD Recorder boxes.

Thats actually pretty good. Depending on functions and what it supports, I might skip building a HTPC (although I would like to - just for fun).
