PS3 40GB vs 60GB

im planning to buy a PS3 this new year. i noticed all of a sudden the 60GB is scarce in supply and nowhere to be found in ads in high street,etc. so im stuck i guess with the 40GB. but:

1. is it true the 40GB is lighter, quieter and cooler than the 60GB?

2. can i still watch my DVD's with the 40GB?

3. is it still have all the "standard" stereo and DolbyHD, etc. audio of the 60GB version?

4. can i still connect it online to update my PS3, online games,etc.

The 60Gb versions have been discontinued, that is, if you can find one now, it ain't gonna be new.

As far as your questions go:

1. The boxes are still stupidly heavy, so I couldn't tell you

2-4. The only thing thats changed in the 40Gb model (apart from 20Gb of HDD space disappearing) is that the PS2 compatibility is now completely screwed, as opposed to being almost completely screwed.

i read the 40gigdoesnt have wireless?

It does have wireless, but its not backward compatible with ps2 games- as they removed the emotion chip. It has 2 usb ports instead of 4, and it has no memory card reader. And lastly but not least they removed the chrome trim.

Beside that its the same as the 60gb.

You can increase the hd space by just adding any 2.5inch laptop drive into the ps3.

You can pick up a good (seagate, western digital) 60gb for about £35 and 120gb for about £50.

Wrong. For clarification....

1.The 40gb PS3 has no backwards compatibility at all. As in the feature has been take out completely.

2. The 60gb is not "almost completely screwed" - all my 50 odd PS2 titles work fine on my PS3. There are is a small amount of titles that have had known issues , but there are regular firmware updates that apart from adding new features also update compatibility for older titles that may have issues. The later firmware updates have also introduced 1080 upscaling for older PS titles - so very far from "almost completely screwed".

To OP As others have said apart from the backwards compatibility/number of usb socks/lack of Mediareader/and disk space size, its the same PS3

The disk space size is really a non issue - just grab a larger one (or use external HD storage)
