This update was officially announced a couple of weeks ago -17th June I think. The rumoured release date is 2nd July, so in two days if people are right.
Apparently, the following list of options are available after the update on the in-game XMB:
Friend category
View, send, receive messages
Manage downloads
Set the vibration feature of the controller
Sign in to PlayStation Network
Register friends
Manage Bluetooth devices
Terminate the game
Music category
Use the system BGM
Work the system BGM operation panel
Settings category
Assign controllers
View profiles
Game category
Set audio devices
Use the voice changer
Access to the XMB whilst ingame is a major bonus for me. Having to come out of a game to change settings or because someone sent you a chat invite is most annoying. Trophies...I really couldn't care less about in all honesty.

It'll be interesting to see the trophies i've already got with older games that i didnt realise.
i could care less about trophies. i want the ability to do in game chat and custom music. i will be happy with that
Does this allow cross game voice chat though? The video doesn't make it clear.

No such luck, trophies aren't retroactive, you have to start new games to earn trophies you already have...Originally Posted by gtech
That sucks.They should update it for what you have already done.
The trouble is if they did that then people would just trade save games... which is what happened on XBox Live, and get lots of achievements they haven't earned.That sucks.

Well, looks like there was one surprise in the update... a new store view.

They still manage to not get it right. I can't play my own music during games as all of my music is on my HTPC. Apparently it needs to be on your PS3.
Sort it out sony.
