You have to do it over the phone.

    Well .......

..... do you have more than one card?

If so, you could always .... ermmmm .... lose that one. If you can't find it, you, being a responsible individual, would immediately notify your card issuer that it's either lost or stolen (you don't know which), and they should immediately cancel it and reissue a new card. Of course, you'll need to arrange to move any other repeating charges to the new card, so their might be some admin to do.

Oh, and make sure that you cancel any services you no longer want, and that you allow for any notice periods.

I don't use XBox Live (and this is partly why), so I don't know how it works. Clearly, if you're paying in arrears, or if you have to give a notice period to cancel a service, then you're probably contractually bound to pay for that period, and I don't advocate cancelling the payment method to try to get out if it. It won't work, and you just risk ending up on a debt collector's list or in court. I certainly do not recommend cancelling a card to get out of a debt you owe.

However, assuming that with XBL it's an auto-renewing subscription paid in advance, and that you can cancel any time in advance of the service period starting, and just want the card removed to ensure you don't get charged for a service you have (and were entitled to) cancel, then "losing" the card does the trick. They'll still have card details, but it'll be a dead card.

Oh, and if you need to cancel a renewal, make sure you keep hard copy proof that you have done so, and it's dated, and before the renewal period comes up. There can be issues with legit charges applied to cards after they're cancelled. You want to be able to dispute the charge (if it goes through) and show it was neither wanted, nor legit. You want your card company to be able to tell MS to take a hike, so the more evidence you have that the service was cancelled before any charges (or the card was lost), the better.

Yeah MS has had a lot of flak over it since then, they're supposed to have sped it up; sure I've heard MS say that before . Good luck, you'll probably need it.

    Re: Removing credit card?

I had them taking money from a card that was 2 years out of date... TWO YEARS!!!

Took a week to get it removed (didn't have the 4 digit number they ask for, since the card had been chucked). Phoning them up is the only way to get it cancelled.

Was sure i saw some time ago a way to remove card details through live account settings. Seems odd you have to phone up!
