Yes.... the HD-DVDs might not play unless you have HDCP display/card and use dvi/hdmi and you have the right playing software
I think there was only one or perhaps two HD-DVD titles that mandated a HDCP secure path all the way to the monitor, so you should be fine in that regard. However, there were versions of PowerDVD that regardless of the HDCP flag insisted on a secure path. but as PowerDVD no longer supports HD-DVD, you don't need to worry about that.
I recommend Total Media Theatre for HD-DVD and BluRay playback. I think it will play any HD content you throw at it.
I know nothing about this HDCP that you speak of tbh. I have a HD4780 card connected by DVI to my monitor but I will be buying a 32' TV next week with 1080p rez so hoping to get it set up with HDMI.
I actually just downloaded Power DVD 9 (I think) so have I wasted my time doing that then?
I was just wondering about the HD-DVD player as you can pick them up dirt cheap now new. Plus the back catalogue of HD-DVD's can be picked up starting at 2 quid LOL.
I do not buy Blu-Rays simply because they are too dear but at these prices I would buy a good collection in no time.

HDCP is a digital rights management used to protect HD content such as that stored on Blu-Ray & HD-DVD. Depending on how secure a certain piece of media is you may only need to be using a HDCP capable video card (your 4870 is HDCP so don't worry!) on the otherhand you may need to be using a HDCP video card, HDMI/DVI cable and a HDCP compliant monitor or TV.
The PS3 only supports HDMI connectivity when used with a HDCP compliant TV/monitor, if your display has HDMI/DVI ports but isn't HDCP compliant then you won't be greeted with any picture.

for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.
PowerDVD 9 does not support HD-DVD out of the box, you hvae to pach it back in using files from an old release. these can be found online fairly easily, but I´m not going to link to it as I think that would be frowned uppon by the admins. You also need to re-apply the patch every time you update PowerDVD.
As I said Arcsoft Total Media Theatre is much better for this.
Well guys, I went ahead and bought one but it does not come with any of the software that would normally be included with it.
Anyone know where I could pick it up from? Would it be available on a Microsoft site via download maybe?
If anyone has one spare I would appreciate it if you would give me a chance to buy it from you at an agreed price. If you would not be willing to sell could someone make a copy of it for me and send it to me?
Thank's guy's, I am just a little bit excited to watch my first Hi-Def movie on my own TV. I have ordered Batman:The Dark Knight, Spiderman 3, Casino Royale, iRobot & Earth (Documentary) on Blu Ray, they should be here hopefully Saturday or Monday probably.
I have also ordered Lost in Translation, Transformers 2 Disc Special Edition, Matrix Revolutions and a couple more that have slipped my mind for a moment on HD-DVD.
After holding off from going HD I am now officially a convert so I expect to be spending some of my disposable income on movies until the novelty factor settles down to normal.

The 360 drive should come with a xbox disk, that is all, nothing for windows. After all, it isn't meant to be used on Windows. When you plug it in, Windows should go and get the drivers from Windows Update though.
As for playback software, you will need to buy something. See my earlier post for more details.
Yup, legal options only here please!
@ Funkster - yeah I am looking into that Arcsoft TMT you mentioned before but was not sure if I needed anything from the software disc to get me started. Now I know that I don't then all the better.
@ Zap & Grey M@a - It's ok I have a PS3 that will be used for Blu Ray playback, I won't be tring to bung them into my XBOX360 add-on drive (well not sober anyway!)
@ dave87 - I do apologise for asking for a copy of Microsoft software on the board. I thought because I owned the drive that I would be entitled to use the software. I went about it the wrong way and I am sorry for any offence I may have caused.
Thank's again to anyone who helped me out in trying to answer my questions in this thread. It is fully appreciated by me.
