Time to ditch the Phat and get a Slim...

    Hey all,

Now that the PS3 Slim has 45nm Cell/40nm RSX chips (from March 2010 anyways) vs the 45/65 launch models I feel now is a good time to ditch my trusty phat launch model (90nm/90nm) JPN 250GB PS3 for the new slim, which should give me silence and huge power savings.

I was just wandering if anyone has brought one of these new Slim's (Model Prefix: CECH-21) and has any opinions on them?

I know I'll loose PS2 Hardware Backward Compatibility but I never once used that feature so that doesn't bother me, I can live with the 2 USB over 4 on the Phat, the supposed slow blu-ray loading also doesn't bother me as I've got a Standalone player for blu's. I'll only use the PS3 for Gaming and PlayTV.

Also, has anyone put a 7200rpm hdd in the PS3 Slim and noticed any decent performance increase?

    TIA!

Re: Time to ditch the Phat and get a Slim...

heres a video I saw a long time ago, they put a SSD into a ps3 phat, basically is makes no difference.

Skip the vid half way to get to the actual test

    http://www.escapistmagazine.com/vide...a-SSD-in-a-PS3

It has also been tried on the slim, still no improvements
    http://uk.gamespot.com/features/6192258/index.html

On some other sites I've read that even if you use a normal faster HDD, most people can hardly tell the difference, you only will gain 1-2 seconds in ps3 boot up times. For installing it can be from 5-10 seconds, but as for loading games forget it.

Thanks buddy, I thought that I would just double check as I read pretty much the same info about a faster hdd when I upgrade my old phat ps3. I'll think I'll buy another Samsung one as I've had no problems with my 250 in my phat ps3.

I've got a 7200rpm drive and I really didn't notice much difference. I just thought "why not" as the price was practically the same and it can't do any harm having a faster drive.

    Can't do any harm?
    What about the increased heat?
How does the noise compare to a 5400rpm drive?

Save your money, it's not really worth it, the phat's fine for what you want it for. If it's not broken and all that.
I've had my US phat since launch, fixed the YLOD and it runs perfectly, i wouldnt even consider upgrading unless my phat died and couldnt be fixed...you got money to burn?

The Heat output of the first gen's take the piss, now that i've got PlayTV I can't be having the PS3 heating up my room every time it records something, hoping the new slim won't be as bad, I ordered a ps3 slim this morning.

Money to burn - Yeah, I had £180 worth of Amazon Vouchers after I cashed in most of my Nectar Points so it only ended up costing me £70 for the PS3 slim (120GB), free hdmi cable and Red Dead Redemption.
Speaking of burning money I also ordered a nice 640GB HDD for it.

I'll say this for my JPN Phat PS3, it's never had a YLOD or any problems, just a pity about the heat output and power consumption otherwise I doubt I would have ever replaced it.
