You may as well stored everyone's data in a plain text file called ~/everyonesstuff.txt or something. Hell, that may have even been an improvement.

I mean, it doesnt matter what you change, the information is old and they probably have it all anyway, the best you can hope for is that any credit card info they may get is no longer valid.

I'm not so worried about CC info that is easy to change, its the fact that they have enough details to setup a loan or to try and get into your bank accounts that worries me.

Only thing you can really do is make damned sure you don't reuse passwords. For the longest time I thought the weakest point of a password was me. Turns out I was gravely mistaken!

Actually the first thought that went through my head when I read "encrypted 2007 database" was: "Oh FFS they're keeping it in access, it'll be ripped in less time that it took to form this thought"

I'd argue that the username and passwords are more useful. The vast majority of people tend to have similar (if not identical, where it can be helped) credentials wherever they go on the internet, everywhere from forums, to emails, to eauctions, to etailers. And they wont readily change it much even if they catch on that it's compromised. While a credit card's lifespan is limited to the point where money starts disappearing from it.

For people who are not able to remember multiple passwords without writting them down, I suggest you have a "base password" then add some random letters/number to it, then just record the differences. As they cannot "see" the passwords except by breaking them as they were hashed this kind of thing does not "give away" your base password. I suggest using severial "base" password, atleast one for generic web sites, one for etailers and one for banks.

I went one further and committed myself to keepass, its the only way I can cope. At last count, excluding work, I think I'm sat on 30 unique passwords not including throwaway pissant forums (hexus is in keepass vault )
