RROD in 360 Elite after opening it up...

    Hi all,
Well, it finally borked. My 360 Elite went from being a bit noisy to being really bloody noisy, so clever me I decided to open the bugger to see if there was anything making it sound like a 747. Nothing to see inside, so closed it up, plugged it in, and BOOM. RROD, three flashing red lights. The specific error code was 'general hardware failure/power failure'. I tried a different power brick to see if it was that, but no dice. I regret so much that I didn't just trade it in when I had the chance for a nice new quiet one, but can anyone out there suggest anything I can do other than selling it for scrap?
    Thanks,
    Max

I had this a little while ago on my elderly 20Gb model and fixrd it with one of the kits available on Ebay. As standard the heat sink is held on with a clip which the kit replaces with bolts and washers. You need to reflow the solder around the CPU and GPU chips using a standard hobbyists heat gun.

You'll find plenty of videos on Youtube showing the procedure. It's simple to do and my xBox is still going strong several months after the operation.

The elite doesn't suffer as much from the heat problems of the original as it has an updated heapipe heatsink. That said the cooling is still poor when compared to modern pcs.

I recon it's your power adaptor brick. That's got a fan in it and can get caked with dust if it's on the floor behind the desk.

I've opened my elite loads of times and not had problems. I think if yours is screwed it's simply bad luck rather than anything you did.

Don't waste your time with the towel trick. It's not likely to give you more than a few weeks before it goes again. Reflowing the solder and bolting the heat sink down is much more effective.

Doing the bolt down heatsink method is pretty cheap and easy. I have had quite a few good results using this method without using heat first, and lots that needed heated first, I use a hot air paint stripper.

what is the secondary error code llamma.com/xbox360/repair/Xbox-360-error-codes.htm
x-clamp fix is a bit hit and miss you really need a proper reball but with the prices of slims low it may be time to bite the bullet and upgrade

I ended up getting a new slim in the end.

What should I do with the old Elite? Ebay?

Re: RROD in 360 Elite after opening it up...

If your Elite had Zephyr motherboard then it was probably your optical drive which died. The same happened to me but luckily mine was in warranty. They return it back with a Lite-On drive (much better then BenQ/Hitachi).

*Google: "Xbox 360 Board Power Connectors" to tell which motherboard you have.

You could sell it on eBay or on a Xbox forum.

A friend of mine sold his dropped one (his girlfriend wasn't in the good books!) on ebay and still got around £40 for it.. worth a go!
