The caddys are pretty rare at the moment and you'll pay silly money for one I imagine. You can add a harddisk without one however and it works just fine. A few websites have detailed this process. The 12GB flash memory lapyiwin is built in and is disabled when you add a harddisk back in. To me, I see this as a perfect opportunity to add a cheap 128 ish or 256GB flash drive.

    Re: 12gb ps3

i took the caddy i had from a fat ps3 and cut the lip off the side and it now fits inside the slim with a bit of card wedged under it to hold it in place

For what it is, it's still fairly expensive. It would be far more reasonable at around £5, but I guess it's a nice way for Sony to make some nice profit on each one sold.

With all the packaging it comes in you would think it was a £100 gadget not a 2p piece of metal.

Yes, you can pick up a bracket on sites like eBay for around £10.
The 12GB is flash memory, so you can pick up a 2.5" HDD to add to the storage, but just be sure that you purchase a 5400RPM drive, as I've heard that people have had problems with higher speed drives.

The HD doesn't add to the storage, it completely replaces it and the 12 gig becomes inaccessible after the PS3 has copied your content across.
