    PS3 vs PS4: Do I have a need for a PS4 ?

First off I must admit that I'm selfishly using your brains and not mine own.

    It's busy doing other things.....

But... assuming the following statements are true, which they are, is a PS3 to PS4 upgrade worthy?

    A) Our PS3 is used for Films, iPlayer, Lovefilm and TV use nearly all the time.
    B) Two games get played on it. GT4 and Tombraider 2013.
    C) It's only EVER used on a projector at 1080 on a 7 foot wall and WITH DTS 5.1

Can the new one do higher res? 4k? I would buy a new PJ one day if it were worthy.

And ignoring those uses, what would a PS4 do to tempt me into using it more for gaming? than a Ps3?

    Re: PS3 vs PS4: Do I have a need for a PS4 ?

I'm personally holding off on a PS4 for a little while yet, no real reason to get it yet.

Exclusives at the minute are limited on PS4
My TV is 51" 3D 1080p Samsung Plasma so anything higher (4k) is a waste of time as won't be upgrading it for another few year
My PC still runs all but everything maxxed out in 1080p and can stream to said TV with Gigabyte Skyvision
Steam Big Picture is excellent with Skyvision and a game controller
Can also stream movies and music with Skyvision

Loads of games are still coming out for PS3, clocked up 90 hours on Dark Souls 2 so far on it. Not forgetting this game is due its Steam release with higher resolution etc.

No backwards compatibility with PS3 disc games so you will have to pay for Sonys game streaming service to play your PS3 games, most likely either renting them or buying them outright again. Service is not yet available though on PS4, something that will most likely be happening this year.

    NOT backward comp[atible?

    again?

Oh hell... well it doesnt bother ME but it will the the rest of the world.

When PS3 came out and woul'dnt play PS2 games but WOULD play PS1 classics it stopped up buying a PS3 for a loooong time

To be honest, from the information you've given me, it would appear you have no reason to go out and buy a PS4. You don't do much gaming. I suppose the only thing you would really get out of it is better movie quality. I say you stick to PS3.

    Re: PS3 vs PS4: Do I have a need for a PS4 ?

They couldn't do backward compatibility because of hardware issues, in basic form; its cheaper and less hassle to take that feature out.

There arent may new games coming out and theyre mega expensive so PS4 for a casual gamer doesnt have much appeal, over the next few months they will just abandon ps3 in hope you move to ps4.

I replaced my ps3 not too long ago, so I wont be getting a ps4 yet! Maybe when AC is out

TBF, as Sibbs10 said, there are genuine reasons it's not backwards-compatible with PS3.

They could, like with the initial PS3 models, include the last-gen hardware on the motherboard, but that's not cheap to do. The PS4 is x86 vs POWER with a load of specialised SIMD cores with local memory which would be catastrophically inefficient to emulate in x86. Plus, I seem to remember reading that Nvidia weren't overly cooperative (shocker) about licensing their GPU design to be fabbed in a single-die solution like happened with the 360, so I doubt attempting to emulate it would go down any better.

Edit: Just realised this thread was started a few months ago.

    Re: PS3 vs PS4: Do I have a need for a PS4 ?

I really cannot see how it's worth it. Especially as you only play 2 games and one of those has very limited replay value.

I'd look at getting a totally silent HTPC for movie duties and retire the PS3 at some point (oh, that's exactly what I did )

If you want to justify a PS4, your probably going to have to wait a bit for a decent catalogue of games.

I honestly expect the beginning of 2015 to buy the ps4:
    Christmas deals
    release of some worthy entertainment

    Re: PS3 vs PS4: Do I have a need for a PS4 ?

I wouldn't buy a PS4 yet. Price is too high and most of the big releases such as Uncharted 4, Bloodborne, MGS5 and The Order: 1866 are coming out in 2015.

Save your money, there is no need for you to upgrade from what you have said.

If you must, wait for PS5 and the price should have dropped significantly.

When I got my ps3 it had a chip in it for backwards compatibility, but maybe that wasnt when it first came out? I dno I have a bad memory.
I would hold off for now, I can't see the ps4 being able to handle 4k

If you can afford it then I would say purchase a PS4, if money is an issue then you could wait as theres not many great games available. Especially if your a PC gamer, as a lot of the games are multiplatform

I always hang back until the refresh editions come out. Smaller and cheaper for the sake of waiting.
Grab that. Get that. Check it out. Bring that here. Grab anything useful. Take anything good.

    Re: PS3 vs PS4: Do I have a need for a PS4 ?

I own PS games, but can't play them on PS3. Instead, I have to buy them again, if I wish to play them. Now comes the PS4, I have plenty of beautiful games on the PS3, but since the PS4 isn't backwards compatible, I'd have to buy them again if I wish to replay them...

(Looking at you Watch_Dogs, The Last Of US, GTA V) :/
