Is this sort of thing do-able?

Well, i have all my music stored on my PC and was wondering for that reason if somthing along these lines was possible, im not up to date with technology etc.

Having speakers in my room, the other side of the house from where my PC is. That could wirelessly connect and have music streamed to them from the PC. Just wondering if theres any decent systems like this that can do it. If it had a way of actualy going through my music library and choosing songs from there, thatd be even better, great!
Itd basicly be my room, the speakers hooked up to the TV aswell as this setup.

There is also the Kiss DVD player - DB-600 (I think, might be DV) which can also stream HD Video content as well as mp3's etc, and is a dvd player too.

It's at pixmania for £189.

Don't have any personal experience with it, but read it does work pretty well. I guess you'd need it hooked up to a display of some kind though (TV typically).

I'll add another vote for a Squeezebox. they are great

i have two (and an original SliMP3 unused in a cupboard)

You will need something to amp up the audio output from the SB though if the speakers are just fed directly from the TV.

Another vote for the squeezebox here as well

I've got 1 at home sat next to the hi-fi and I use this as a wireless bridge with my router and plug the xbox360 into it's network port and voila.... access to live and messages without messing (or paying for the wireless adaptor)

i use a modded xbox (original) to do something similar, also handles any videos (just about any codec), photos, etc.

Thanks very much for all the suggestions, the squeeze box seems to be definetly what i want!

The only thing that'd really be needed would be the ability to browse through, say folders, or by artists / albums on the squeeze box's screen, can you do this?

I do have an extremely large music collection, and its always growing, having a family of 5, all with different music tastes. From my Dads collection of 100s of old classics all kept on CD but also on the PC, to my half downloaded half CD collection of litterally 1000s of rock / punk / metal songs(theres also the 2 brothers with the horriblest taste of music ever (dance!)), so just being able to flick from 1 to the next 1 would be a bit of a down fall.
But apart from that it seems like the perfect competitor. I'm not buying this for a good few months yet but looking into it now looked like a good idea. Need to look into speakers, and a divx / xvid dvd player but i suppose thats not to important, but the speakers will be!

Have look over at http://www.slimdevices.com/. you can donload SlimServer and play around with SoftSqueeze, a Java SB emulator, so see how it all works.

I have almost 1000 albums with about 14,000 tracks. It works well. You can easily jump to items in lists using the number keypad on the remote.

Slightly more impressive than me, mines is 700 Albums and roughly 7500 songs. Ill beat you one day though

When you say number you can use the number keypad on the remote to jump to items, do you mean like, anything along the lines of, you use it like a phone, with abc def ghi etc, to search? Or that you press numbers and it jumps to that number in the list.

Currently installing slimserver to play about with it!

Thanks, looks like the squeeze box is perfect!

Only problem at the moment would be the distance of my router to the squeeze box, but seeing as im not buying the squeeze box / speakers til the house is re done and room changed about, the PC will have been moved through the house by then, so no problems there!

Keeping my music backed up is basicly a copy of it on 3 different hard drives, the one i use 24/7 having the most up to date copy, my data drive, with all my documents etc, which is barely ever touched, and a backup removable HDD, which has everything important, eg the music

2x 500gig drives. one is an offline copy of the other. I update the offline version in batches.

It's not perfect, but i think it is pretty safe
