Wooden floor - get some spikes.
Zak has posted the best info here I reckon, and the link to the Denon AV amp is good too, but I'd have serious doubts about Sony speakers
If you decided to go the whole hog and go 5.1 (fronts, rears, centre and sub), then the Acoustic Energy EVO3 is a great set of speakers, well matched and truly "hifi" (IMHO).
My system is now at the stage where I don't say "listen to my speakers", I say listen to this music, that film etc
Transparent hifi at last !
My Dad has the tannoy set linked to above. It's OK, but the bass is very muddy. If thats as far as your budget will stretch then its a reasonable buy.
The KEF stuff gets good reviews, richer sounds has a set for £299 although i've never heard them.
The Denon reciever is meant to be good, the cambridge audio stuff is well worth a look too, again dad has the 540R V1 which is good IMO. Maybe not got the adjustment of the more expensive amps but sound quality for music is meant to be best in its class (And the class above!)

I wouldn't go for the Sony amp (sorry Zak), we have had one delivered to work but it is of very poor build quality compared to a Denon or Yamaha etc. The casing is very thin, the power supply very light and cheap and you only get spring clip speaker terminals for your centre/rears instead of binding posts. Problem with that is getting thick cable into them - you won't.
If he wants something to last him then get a Denon/Yamaha or a more expensive Sony. As mentioned earlier the Cambridge is great for music but no way near a Denon for films or build quality.
As for the Kef speakers, they are great. I used to have a set of those before my Concerto 1's. They were a £249.99 pair of speakers in 2000 and they were 5* What hifi winners. Sound lovely with the right kit, I used my Denon I still have (in fact I bought it at the same time). The other benefit of the Cresta 3's is you can buy Cresta 1's and a centre for very little money now to give you full 5.1.

It helped me loads in my decision for the system
cool, il have a look at AVforums!
its been decided that he doesnt want a 5.1 now, he just wants 2 floorstanders and a centre only!
so now my question is..which ones to buy???
thats were you lot come in!
Take a look at the b&w 600 s3 series - they have great reviews and customer feedback. I think the series 4 is coming out sometime soon, so it might be worth taking a look at that when it comes or waiting to get some second hand s3 ones cheaper...

Also 2.0 or 2.1 setups are more common than 3.0 - you might want to consider getting a better quality 2.0, and then switching straight to 5.1 when you upgrade.
yeah we've decided to go for 2.0's for now.
Those B&W look really nice as well, which ones would you recommend from richersounds?
Richersounds are good for the amp as they're cheap but i'd suggest going elsewhere for speakers or preferably second hand (You get a LOT more for your money)
For example, if you can find a pair of B&W 600 series floorstanders (Which i'd highly recommend) then this is a bargain center speaker to match them: http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=525887
Absolutely shameless pimpage
Sorry, but I couldn't resist. Selling them at under half of what they cost new, and they are pretty nice sounding - nicer than the Monitor Audio Bronze series and Mordaut Short 9 series when I bought them. Only selling them to get smaller, more wife friendly ones.
