    Sunderland Airshow

hi all, went to Sunderland Airshow at the weekend and thought I'd share some of the pics. Nothing creative, just doing my best as it's the first time I've tried to do this kind of photography.

All images taken with a Sony Alpha A100 and a Sigma 70-300mm lens. The thumbnails all link to 640px images so nothing too horrific for any narrow-banders.

    Any thoughts & suggestions welcome.

    A Dutch F-16:

An RAF Lancaster from the Battle of Britain memorial flight:

The RAF Chinook display helicopter. These guys were incredible:

Team Guinot wingwalkers. Apparently the girls are very pretty and, needless to say, rather strong to withstand 150mph winds:

A team of 5 Russian Yak aerobatic planes. These were very graceful but didn't make for great photos:

A Belgian F-16. Presumably trying to out-do the Dutch guy in the previous F-16. I'd say he managed it:

The Blades. These guys are ex-Red Arrows pilots. It kinda shows:

The RAF Typhoon (a.k.a. Eurofighter). Three words: loud, powerful and FAAAAAST! So fast I got very few keepers of it:

Bah, only 20 images per post. Here's the last set:

Of course, it's the world's best aerobatic display team, the RAF Red Arrows:

very good & especially for your 1st attempt.
Unfortunately in your processing you seem to have stripped the EXIF info so I couldn't check shutter speeds etc.

When shooting props you want to try for a fairly low (under 1/200th anyway) shutter speed to get nice prop blur (your Lanc's are a bit static).
Do you know about http://forums.airshows.co.uk/cgi-bin.../ikonboard.cgi ?

Well it wasn't an accident, I usually specify Lightroom to rip out all the exif data on any images going on the web. Purely out of routine, I'd left the camera in aperture priority mode and even stopped down to F/8, the shutter speeds on the bright scenes were around 1/1250, and ~1/500 on the cloudy shots. Only when I got home and looked at the pics on the computer did I realise that I should've lengthened the shutter speed because all the props and rotor blades were frozen.

Wasnt aware of that message board, might post some of my pics there for them, although compared to some of the Chinook pictures there, their members are much more talented and experienced photographers than I!

I did get rained on, I just put the camera away during the wet bits.

Thanks, as mentioned above I realised too late that I'd been working in A mode, not shutter priority. Will aim for 1/100 next time there's any props around though!
