I was PMed with the link. :| (I gotta admit, I still get a lot of the Hexus users mixed up! Sorry, guys! I'm not Captain Memory!)
Even with all the bad news for Blu-Ray and good news for HD-DVD these past two weeks (which has been mental and I didn't expect it - I think those yields on discs alone make this thread worth posting), I still think that if one of those formats wins, it'll be Blu-Ray. Eventually. Which I've said in this thread and others. In fact, I even just said if I had to choose today, I'd pick Blu-Ray, in the post you just quoted. How is that an anti-Sony anti-Blu-Ray rant?
And I notice that, for the third time, you haven't answered my question. Or then again... maybe you have.
PenguinJim, i do think of myself as a proffesional Programmer/Embedded Engineer so my understanding on these things can go much further than the average bear... but.
I like bluray better at the moment, why? Because my PS3 is almost silent to play the film on, but my xbox 360 sounds like it should have ryan air written on it. The HD addon is also rather noisy, in-excusibly in my mind for a tray loading one, i was very disapointed.
Thats such a bloody stupid reason, but guess what, i've voted that way (4 blurays, 2 HD dvds).
I doubt i'm allone with this, in retrospect there is no way i'd of bought the 360 HD addon.

true, as mentioned earlyer i think the desider will be which has what for less.
For instance i liked the film "Children of Men" (HD-DVD) but i also liked "Layer Cake" (BluRay) if one was £5, one £10, i can tell you exactly which i'd buy, even thou i don't rate the films equally. If that makes sense.
But as it stands, they are both screwing us, so I choose bluray for a stupid reason, regardless of the technology. Hopefully that makes some sense.

I think that's a perfectly good reason. The only reason my mate's 360 is silent is because he never turns it on! There's no way I'm buying a noisy 360, I'm spoiled by my silent PS2 (and honestly think consoles should just be silent anyway).
I'd recommend dumping that HD-DVD drive on eBay ASAP if you don't intend to keep it... I'm pretty sure there's a price drop coming, and considering the good news for HD-DVD in this thread may well be the last we ever see, this may be the best time to sell.

Of course! HD Star Trek would be nice, although only mad people would want to spend out AGAIN on another format if they have it on DVD or something. Being a Trekkie myself I am gutted by it. I agree some nice releases there for HD-DVD. MI3 for one I would like to see. *sigh*
My eyes have been opened. Format wars suck. One will prevail though, maybe by 2009, then Sony will release an HD-DVD drive for the PS3!
I guess the general consensus is those who have a PS3 buy things in Blu-Ray so they don't need to buy an extra HD type of player. TBH, it was a smart move by Sony to integrate one to try and push their format.
If MS had integrated an HD-DVD into say the Elite that would be interesting too ...
Bloody hell penguin the way your going with all these pro-sony comments i might thank you soon!!
Anyways there having a programme dedicated to the whole blu-ray vs hd-dvd tonight on xleague.tv(sky279). I 've watched a few live matches on there but not sure what their going to be like debating??? might be worth a watch though
Cool, I'll set my box to record. I still can't make my mind up as to whether or not I like that channel very much. A lot of the players (particularly those playing fifa) are just arrogant gimps. Though I watched the gears of war show a couple weeks ago and one of the sides were completely owned by the other side - was quite enjoyable to watch talent like that.
EDIT: What time is it on? Sky guide just has a generic description of the shows and doesn't say what will actually be on the show.

Its on at 9.30pm and called games night...yeah i'm still undecided about that channel have watched some good matches but still not enough content at the mo, still wonder how much stuff has been covered here already and if anything new will come from it.
Both formats will lose this war, I've been saying it since both were announced as competing formats.
You have to look back at the previous "big formats" that were with us for a long long time and think about why they were successful......then draw parallels with the current BD/HD-DVD war.
What I have come to the conclusion of is that neither format offers Joe Public enough for him to consider it, nor is JPs TV going to do most HD films the justice they deserve. DVD will prevail and will be the no1 choice until a superior format with writing capabilities emerges in the next 5-10 years.....In the meantime, both formats will act as an enthusiasts stop-gap just like LaserDisc did while the market was using VHS and waiting for the right thing to come along (DVD)
And for the record, I own both formats. Toshiba HD-XA1 and a PS3.

Ironically, I do not own either format, but I do not share the skepticism. Both formats are less than 18 months old since the first title and for all the improvement DVD brought over VHS, DVD did not overtake VHS in that short period either.
Even if HD do not pick up (I reckon it will as long as price gradually drops), I reckon those platforms will be the future of optical storage. If only because there is nothing else on the horizon, and I do not see optical storage getting phased out before apps/games start benefiting from the extra storage.

Oh God. I'm not making this up.
China will be backing a HD-DVD-like format which will allow cheap HD-DVD players to be made.
So China is now HD-DVD. Barrichello has told us this is of major importance, so I guess he's backing HD-DVD now.The upshot here is this: The same country that has literally upset the LCD TV industry on its ear in just the last year alone, now has the specifications it needs to do the same with high-def video discs. While it makes so-called CH-DVD players for the home market (the name is subject to change, the new consortium says), China can also produce HD DVD players for the rest of the world, at prices that can best be described as Chinese.
All of a sudden, the incentive for studios such as Warner Bros. to call a halt to exploiting new disc technologies its own engineers had patented, and for Paramount to jump ship and abort its Blu-ray support, may be becoming clear.
Not only that, but the 51GB triple-layer HD-DVD has been approved, meaning that HD-DVDs are now larger than BD-50 discs - and current HD-DVD players can play them. No BD 1.1 screw-ups here. Also:
OK. I've changed my mind. No Blu-Ray for me! Or HD-DVD either, for that matter, until we start seeing some of these price drops on our shelves... maybe in 12 monthsThe approval by the Forum of a triple-layer hybrid might arguably encourage some studios to release certain titles only on HD DVD/DVD hybrids, which could in turn lead to some DVD buyers building up a library of HD DVD titles by default, before making the decision to upgrade to a hi-def video player. So far there have been no indications that the BD camp plans to support hybrid discs.
Why the Hell is HD-DVD suddenly kicking ass?! I know the analysts said that the PS3 would only bring a brief surge to Blu-Ray, but... well... I didn't actually believe them.

Another format emerged today too. It's bitrate (quality) sits in the middle of the other big two formats yet it costs much less to manufacture....apparently.
Say hello to another lovely shiny new format: HD VMD .
