LCD or Plasma HD 1080p telly

    Hello all,

we're looking to replace our old crt telly. Having popped into the local Comet just to have a look we're not particularly impressed with he LCD offerings that they had. The Sony, Samsung, Panny's etc. picture quality just didn't look very good at all. lots of motion blur and hazing around objects on the screen. Now i understand that the image is only as good as the source from where it's coming from. Some was just an analogue signal while other pictures are from a HD DVD device. So overall not impressed.

Then we walked over to the plasma offerings and my word they looked fantastic. BTW we were looking specifically for true HD (1920x1080) screens. There was no motion blurring or pixlealtion on the screen like on the LCDs. I was very impressed with them.

BUT are there problems with plasmas that i should be aware off?? Is screen burn a problem with this new generation of screens? Heat production, life of the screen? etc...

Any thoughts are welcome. And yes looking to spend max £2k

Re: LCD or Plasma HD 1080p telly

I have a brand new Samsung plasma with PS3, about 2-3months old, and it has logo's burnt in to it already from Motorstorm. When you start it up you can see the Place and Lap indicators on a black or white screen. I'm not impressed.

I have also seen a good Samsung 40" 1080p LCD screen, and there was no motion blur. I don't know what screens people have been looking at, but most new models are fast enough.

I'd try and find a local store with a better setup rather than Comet. Or get them to drag out a PS3 with HDMI cable to try on some different screens.

I have a Sony 1080P LCD screen, and i've yet to see any blur. Using a PS3 i've had no issues with the picture playing games or movies, either upscaled DvD's or Blu-Ray.

You won't need to spend £2K on a 1080P screen, unless you start looking at the Pioneer Plasma screens.

I have no screen burn on my 37" panny plasma that is over 2 years old. I think you need to find a store with decent setup to review and pick which is best for you.

Remember, buying a plasma from Panasonic or Pioneer should mean you don't get screen burn.

I'd be slightly wary of giving assurances like that especially with Pioneer, who seem to have had more than their share of issues in the past.

Regarding motion blur on LCD's, it seems to be something that some people are susceptible to, whilst others aren't. It's not really a response rate issue, and it's at least partly due to "afterglow" which is a symptom of backlit panels.

To me, plasma seems to deal better with fast movement, and although maybe it's not always quite as crisp as LCD, I prefer it overall. At anything under 50" I'd take a 720 plasma over a 1080 LCD.

If you have enough dosh for a 1080 plasma, and you're not worried about screen burn, go for it.

Or maybe, just maybe, if you're sticking it in a corner, a rear-pro ?

do not trust the feeds they have in store, ask them to setup something specific for you, I mean the currys near me keeps connecting up 1080i/p plasmas and LCD's at the front of the store on a standard definition DVD player - VIA SCART!

    Numpties.
