You can plug the guitar straight in but if you have a decent amp then you allways wanna record from that as you get the amp sound which can make the whole thing sound great (maybe not applicable with a Fender 15Watt tho )

Only ever used one BOSS pedal, sounded great and had loads of features although was a bitch to work out, not very user friendly (And who says Guitar effects don't work with basses, lol)!

not really bothered about recording stuff just getting a decent sound(im just about deaf as well by the way) as the built in distortion is very poor !!

Grab a cheap mic from somewhere and get it in front of the cab. Recording dry is never a good thing. No matter how much reverb, echo and digital processing you add to the sound, it's never be as good.

I would recommend Cool Edit Pro 2 (now owned by Adobe, and known as Adobe Audition), as it has a variety of built-in effects that you can add, as well as record/edit functions, etc. Best piece of software I've used for recording/mixing songs. Very professional, does almost everything you need (except a drum machine ).

I say "I would recommend", but I can't really, because it comes at a price for the license ($299), however, you can get an official free trial of it from :

    http://www.adobe.com/products/tryado...jsp#product=92

    -edit

I have to agree with Shorty, too... but I would get at least a mic designed for budget recording, rather than a PC or karaoke mic.

Glad to know that you know that Boss Distortion > Most other distortion pedals

Give a couple of others a test chap - especially the Pro-co Rat and Ibanez Tubescreamer, if you haven't tested those before I have a tubescreamer mk3, and it's an absolutely cracking pedal. Not really the best if you're after [norwegian accent]ecsthriem mettaawll[/norwegian accent], but offers a lovely range between high overdrive and mid distortion.

nice christmas present crapshot,,i also play a little guitar although mine is an electro acoustic and was also wondering how my guitar would sound through the pc for example i wanted to create/record a simple track last year on the computer, then while playing it back i wanted to try and record the secondary guitar solo (using the same guitar ofcourse) so when it was finally recorded and sampled it would be 2 guitars playing.
sorry if this sounds daft but i still from time to time wonder about it and would quite gladly go buy the stuff to do it (aslong as it dont cost fortunes) if i knew it could be done.

You just need recording/mixing software for that, chap. Adobe Audition does exactly that. Try the tester
