as Gunbuster says, freesat is free-to-air satellite without the dodgy facial hair and soiled clothes - it presents a respectable, packaged face on FTA services (which include but are not limited to the bbc and itv services, and as of a few days ago channel 4 too)

...and where do they install it? On the outside wall of your house?

for freesat satellite tv? yes, yes you do.

and they install it on the outside of your house, wherever is both appropriate to point to the satellite (at 28.2°E) and not violate any "no satellites in view of the road" rules that may apply to your property

IF I was to get a satellite installed for freesat, at some point down the line, could said satellite, be used to get sky?

in theory. they both point the same way, and the connectors are the same. but sky might get arsey about supporting a non-sky dish

then again, a non-sky dish should give more reliable reception (45cm minidishes suck in rain)

    Re: Freesat launched

You can use a Sky dish with a Freesat box, so it might work the other way round.

well, freesat won't confirm that works either, for the same reason

to make it clear, it works FINE - both services use the same birds, and point the same way. but business isn't about stating the obvious or interoperability...
