Looks like Engadget were a little hasty in declaring the most recent photos of it a fake then

EDIT: My mistake, it was the D90 they posted about

    Re: Nikon D700 specs leaked

Hmm, interesting that they may have gone for the D3's sensor.

The Photokina trade show starting 23rd September may be the target for the launch of three full-frame dSLRs - the Nikon D700, Sony's A900 (name uncertain, but will almost certainly feature an already-announced 24MP sensor), and rumours persist of Canon's successor to the 5D.

The Nikon looks like it'll take on the Canon 5D and it's successor - both should offer amazing high ISO performance, whereas the Sony is going after the ultra-high resolution market instead, and may be competing with medium-format digital backs - with Carl Zeiss on board for lenses, they could do well there too.

Interesting...Nikon are pretty quick on their feet these days. Be interesting to see what Canon announces in response....

Nikon are also supposedly doing a ~24Mp FF (probably a variant of the Sony sensor) body too.

The rumoured D3x, right? It'll likely use the same Sony 24MP sensor, and I would guess will be a heftier camera (price, build and specs) than the Sony A900 (much the same relationship as the Nikon D300 and Sony A700, which feature the same Sony 12MP sensor).
