    Cotswold Air Show 2010

I went to my first air show since I was 16 today. This is the first time I've photographed planes since then, when I was using green box on an EOS 500 film SLR with the kit 80-200mm lens. I'm quite proud of how well I managed to get decent prop blur. I took almost 2,000 photos, and luckily I took my netbook because I only have 20GB of memory cards and I ended up taking 35GB of photos. There are probably more worth looking at, but I gave up by the time I got this many.

All taken with a Canon 50d and a Sigma 50-500mm. Some shots were surprisingly sharp for the lens, others had the usual soft/blooming result despite being usable photos.

I had fun through the day. Except 7 hours in the sun and not putting new sun block on, and not putting it on evenly resulted in this...

I expect it hurts a lot less than the spiteful comments I'll get at work tomorrow. It looks sillier in the mirror than it does in that photo.

Terrific shots, love #3 especially. And I fail at identifying the plane :/

Thank you, all. #3 is a Tucano in commemorative spitfire colours.

I've been to plenty of airshows, but not since I was 16 using the SLR for point and shoot. I would consider this my first "photography" air show, so I'm especially pleased with the prop blur. I started off at 1/250 but experimented from 1/100 on the Black Cats (Lynx?) to 1/320 on other prop planes. I forgot to change it from the 1/400+ I was using for jets on some of the props but some of those photos were fine.

The Typhoon and Spitfire didn't fly together, and I don't remember them being near each other on the ground unless they were at the other end of the runway.

I think Fairford was better with more planes, and more loud jets. But Kemble was half the price and enjoyable anyway.

oh my bad! it was @ RAF Cosford, not Cotswold...

1/125 will produce great results with propped aircraft

Indeed Nice shot of the Shorts Tucano You did well with the Black Cats, always tough to expose the helos properly and get good blade blur. Getting wound up now for the big three shows next month
