    Finally!

Just note which version of the 18-55 kit lens you've been given, the earlier ones were basically dog awful. The one you want is the newer 'IS' (Image Stabilised) this one

    Thank you for the giggles

Have a guess at what an ultra-violet filter might do

    Re: which nikon?

No you don't need it, you just need to be aware that the earlier 18-55 kit lenses were a bit naff, whereas the new IS version that comes with the likes of the 1000D is quite decent.

Once you find your feet and start shooting seriously you'll be able to see the limitations of the lens and see how soft it is.

I would definately pick up a 50mm f/1.8 prime, it'll blow your kit lens away for clarity and makes you think on your feet about composition.

Hehe no worries - only the literal meaning is obvious. The real question is 'what effect does it have on my images?' and the answer is 'none - your sensor already has a UV filter built in' or maybe 'it might degrade the image a bit'. However it might also protect the front element if you're worried about it.

At the end of the day you've got a good camera at a good enough price that you should be able to pick up a 50mm f/1.8 later. The kit lens will be great to learn from and just get used to the camera, and the 50 will be great on that camera once you're used to it.

Just as a note - it's rare to see the IS version with the 1000D - yes with the 450/500/550 but not with the 1000D, Canon try to keep it as cheap as possible and IS version bumps the price up too much.

Well there are two kit versions, one with IS version and one without. But you could be right regarding availability.
