Finally!
Just note which version of the 18-55 kit lens you've been given, the earlier ones were basically dog awful. The one you want is the newer 'IS' (Image Stabilised) this one

ye.....i didnt get that one, but do i need it? ive got a pretty steady hand as is. however the LENs does have a ultra violet filter? not sure what that does mind
No you don't need it, you just need to be aware that the earlier 18-55 kit lenses were a bit naff, whereas the new IS version that comes with the likes of the 1000D is quite decent.
Once you find your feet and start shooting seriously you'll be able to see the limitations of the lens and see how soft it is.
I would definately pick up a 50mm f/1.8 prime, it'll blow your kit lens away for clarity and makes you think on your feet about composition.
gimme a min....im going to google
""edit""
God wish i googled it first...dont i sound dumb!
Hehe no worries - only the literal meaning is obvious. The real question is 'what effect does it have on my images?' and the answer is 'none - your sensor already has a UV filter built in' or maybe 'it might degrade the image a bit'. However it might also protect the front element if you're worried about it.
At the end of the day you've got a good camera at a good enough price that you should be able to pick up a 50mm f/1.8 later. The kit lens will be great to learn from and just get used to the camera, and the 50 will be great on that camera once you're used to it.
this is what i thought, im only just starting out i dont intend on becoming a pro or anything just want to be able to take some nice pictures of my kids, fish and anything else if i can why not? a pretty big learning curve so far....
