Can't really go wrong with an iPod IMO..
Sure you can they are massively overpriced for a start. That's wrong right there.
Our son just bought himself a Sony mp4 player that sounds as good if not better than an Ipod, it's 32 gig and was only about 80 Euro. to get that size in an Ipod you were looking at at least double that plus some.
Depends if price is the issue, or if it's a factor, how much of one.
The last one I bought was Creative Labs (Vision M). Why? Mainly, sound. I compared iPods (very good), Sony (very, very good) and bought the Vision M because I preferred the actual sound, and that was more important, within reason, than price.
Also, it depends if Neon just wants it for sound? If not, then iPod Touch are very versatile. If the other features matter, it's hard to compete with that. If they don't, you're paying for features you may not use.
Another factor is how good the earphones are. There's little point buying a high-end player for audio quality if it's used through cheap and nasty phones. I'm assuming from neon's questions and priorities that he's sorted in that department.
As for what to buy, well, I'm not the one to advise. Suffice it to say I see an iPod Touch (32GB probably) potentially looming in my future.
Id recommend a sansa clip+ or the new clip zip, reliable and can store crap loads... buy the 8gb version for ~£25 - £30 and then add in a microsd card, 16GB hangs around £8 now or you could look for a 32gb when they sometimes drop to around £25.
Sound quality = on par with sony and cowon i.e better than ipods etc
Price vs performance = the best, expandability and it has a fair few features like support for almost all formats (FLAC is among them ), gapless playback, replay gain and many more!.
Only reason i dont have one now is that ive lost my clip+ ... lol,
Sorry should have said I don't buy anything Apple . . . hate itunes and they are overpriced. I am using ultimate ears 700 at the minute. Not the best but definitely a good set of earphones!
Thanks for the help so far.
Is there anything new coming out worth waiting on from the likes of Sony or Cowon? (Or anyone else worth buying)
As for price - no more than £250 really

Totally agree with Hicks12.
I have a Clip+ flashed with Rockbox fw which is very customisable, excellent vfm.
It just seems that most are basically the same since 2009. Surely something new is coming out?

Sansa Clip+ with Rockbox here, FLAC is supported with Rockbox and there is plenty of control over audio quality.
