Another upgrade - New rear speakers

Well I decided a couple of days ago I was gonna try my sub in the corner... RIGHT in the corner unlike where it was before... Behind me by the wardrobe.

Without going into too much detail, it's a lot better. The real lower frequencies are more noticeable. And I don't need to drive the subwoofer's amp as hard to achieve the same goals. Which is great. But one problem prevailed...

Where the sub is now, was a table that held my right rear speaker. A whopping great floorstander.

Sod that I thought. I'm getting rid of these. They're far too large and overkill anyway.

My brother has also recently installed a pair of These tripole speakers and the effects they can produce are startling.

I decided I was gonna give a set of bipole/dipole speakers a go (Bipole meaning the two firing drivers are running in-phase, dipole meaning they're out of phase), so off to RicherSounds this morning and I got a pair of Eltax HT-2 Micros (Seen here, but the picture is of the larger but identical (minus the tweeter) HT-2.).

Took a good couple of hours to get them set up in my room. Wires are going through the loft for one of them for simplicity

So do they sound better? Yes. Not quite as "aparent" as the previous speakers, but they're far more spacious sounding and it's a lot less direct. More surrounding

Bi/di/tripole speakers are the future. Direct radiating rear speakers are a thing of the past

Isn't one of the rears higher than the other? Or am I imagining it? Looks good though, you've got the cabling nice and tidy

Anyways, Im possibly putting together a home cinema setup for my parents, with hopefully a decent budget, so do you reckon that that dipole/bipole speakers make a large difference over normal rears? Hows it supposed to work anyway, one fires at you the other reflects off the wall then back to you to make it sound more wide and open, or something completely different?

Nope they're both the same height, give or take a few MM.

Di/bi/tripole speakers do make a difference? The sound is far more wide and open just like you said. Doesn't sound so directional. Wide and open and surrounding is what 5.1 is all about

Ah, the ceiling slopes, I can see it now! There's cunning I'm still trying to decide if there's any point in 6.1 now

Not really. It adds a centre rear speaker which is often a bit of a bitch to place correctly as most people don't have the perfect cinema room

Did you consider ceiling speakers? I understand that you had access to the loft.

Considered it but my mum didn't want me chopping up the roof. She draws the line at screws in the wall. Lol. Besides it's a little difficult to relocate ceiling speakers if things don't turn out as planned

Very nice indeed. After I have finished purchasing my new computer i am planning on doing a 5.1 setup in my room but until now was considering a cheap set of rears like the Gale mini monitors to match the speakers i have got planned for the front (Already own a set if gale 3020s).

What do you use them for? PC, TV or are you lucky enough to own a projector.

I use my bedroom setup for DVDs, TV (Freeview) and Media PC stuff.
