Question how to get audio from Virgin+ HD box into analogue speakers cheaply?

As it says. I don't have a hifi with SPDIF to feed into. Video goes via HDMI into my HP 24" monitor, which doesn't have built in speakers.

I know there are analogue converters out there for around £30-40 but I want a quick, cheaper solution, if it exists. I'd read that some peeps use the scart to feed out analogue signal to RCA ports on speakers but that doesn't work for me, somehow

    TIA

Headphone out from TV into aux input of HiFi. £3 cable job.

edit: ah, unless monitor doesn't have headphone out, sorry. Will update with more thoughts soon.

edit2: what are the outputs from the 'box?

No amp with SPDIF, sounds like only active speakers with phono inputs.

yep, only active speakers with phono.

Monitor has a gazzillion inputs but minimal outputs - HP LP2475W

V+ HD box only has SPDIF for audio out, aside from HDMI & scart.

Re: how to get audio from Virgin+ HD box into analogue speakers cheaply?

FYI, there are SPDIF DACs on ebay for £20 delivered from the UK.

Also, you said SCART to RCA doesn't work for you. A bit obvious but have you checked you have the correct SCART adapter? SCART is directionally pinned, your adapter may only support input for example. Some adapters are wired for either input or output which is selectable by a switch, have you tried switching between in/out?

EDIT: Another obvious one, but worth asking, have you played with the options and setup menu on the V+ HD box for an option to enable the SCART socket or simultaneous output?
