You can pick up a Pioneer DVD play that can play both formats for about £150, so it doesn't really matter about which one is better.
Ah yes the DV-575 or whatever it is. I've been tempted for a while. Lol

Yeah, although, to be honest, with the kind of level of setup you get with the 575 I'm not sure theres that noticable a difference between CD and SACD anyway, and DVD-A is just great for multi-speaker sorround sound music. As a DVD player its primary focus is DVD playback, so much as it's OK for music, it's not as fantastic as it could be. I think the amp/speaker combination is far more important than the source, personally at least. SACDs will play as normal resolution CDs in a normal CD player, and DVD-As will play in a normal DVD player anyway, iirc.
and you've got the tens of grand's worth of equipment necessary to even stand a chance at hearing the difference?Originally Posted by Howard

The sample DVDA you get with Audigy2 cards isn't mastered very well - there are much better examples of DVDA out there.

This I sincerely doubt, having double-blind tested SACD, DVDA and normal CD on several grand's worth of reference kit it is extremely difficult if not impossible to tell any difference with the same master material. Most portable hifis won't even do 100hz to 10,000hz, let alone get near to the dynamic range possible with either DVDA or SACD.Originally Posted by unrealrocks
DTS is a compressed format, ie lossy. Unless resampled to sound better on crappy equipment (as some manufacturers do) there is no way it can sound better than virgin DVDA or SACD. It's like comparing a raw CCD or BMP digital photo with a JPEG-compressed one.The DTS DVDA disks are even better I recon
