Compact turntable and amp suggestions

I recently bought a house and buried in the various bits of detritus that had been left behind was an old school stereogram used for playing records, it works (kind of) but I want to give it a bit of modernising and stick some new hardware in it. Space is restricted as I want to keep it looking as much like it does now as much as possible and would appreciate any suggestions for a compact turntable and a compact amplifier to go in it. Speakers will be external to the unit and I'm not planning on utilising the existing electricals at all.

Does it not have the old oval internal speakers that these things came with then?

Are you looking for good audio quality, or a fun hardware hacking project?
How about a USB turntable, going to Raspberry Pi or ITX PC board, sound output to something like:

It does have internal speakers but they are pretty shot. I'll get some pictures of it put up and some dimensions of the spaces I'm going to be working with. I'd like to get some decent audio quality as it's going to be the main stereo system and the existing unit is only really going to be used as the housing for more modern equipment.
