If you have any interest at all in depth of character, class story lines or good acting, this DVD is for you.
It does have Nazi references throughout, but none the less, it is quite possibly the best film you'll see for months. And best of all it is worth OWNING as it is re watchable several times, at different times, fordifferent reasons.
Basic story: a yound American student studying history decides he has pinpointed a local man as a GermanWW2 soldier, and more over he was likely to be an infamous Nazi Officer. And the lad takes it upon himself to learn abouthim, then meet him, and finally try to control him with his knoweldge of the old man's past.
But this may well be themost dangerous intellecthe has come across. The story twists and the old mans control over the boy becomes terrifying, and vice-a-versa. Meanwhile the official world wide bodies of War Crime tribunals are after such men.
This fim is, quite literally, tense and intelligent, with depth beyond one viewing. Ian McKellen is fantastic as the old man.
It is so well made, and written, that it would actually make a greatstage play, as you don't need outside influence, but the 3rd dimension of thereal world in this film makes it all the better.
I have nowseen it twice and both times I was knocked off my feet. It is one for your shelf. I promise.
If you see it on ebay for less, even as a VHS, get it. It needs no surround, no special TV, it would be equally enthralling on a portable TV.
Please. Watch it.
