Yeah but .... Facebook.
That, right there, is it .... my everyday life isn't getting conducted anywhere near Facebook. So it's a hard "no" from me to an FB headset, I'm afraid. At any price. If they gave it to me, I'd find someone that wanted it and give it away.Originally Posted by Article
Oh, and I've yet to try a VR headset that didn't make me ill and these days, my eyesight wouldn't play ball anyway.
All told, I think I'll pass.

Indeed I agree, I can't stand Facebook

Shame really 'cos the Quest stuff is supposed to be very good. No use for me anyway, but if it was, the FB link would kill it. Not that the other tech giants are much, if any, better. Some, worse.

They'll sell a few to enterprise users, but FB buying quest has really killed that brand for enthusiasts. The Zuckerborg has probably chalked that up as the cost for making his metaverse wet dream possible.
Lovely bit of kit but super expensive and I just couldn't support meta. Shame the competition isn't great, is it the pico 4 that's the only other really option apart from the valve headset?
They've detached the requirement for facebook a few months ago?

Got to be honest I picked up up a quest 2 open box before the recent price rise and was very impressed however 3 big draw backs:
1) Games - Unless its an FPS they are usually just short experiences. Cool but not good value for money IMHO.
2) Charging - The quest 2 seems to discharge fast when not in use but also lots of reported issues with melting when left plugged in - as a result its never charged when I have time to use it
3) Space - It has an excellent guardian system to tell you when you are about to hit a wall (it shows room in greyscale so you can see the wall) but with my moderate sized front room its not big enough for some games.
Saying all that just being able to load up google earth (or an app called wander that doesn't need a PC) and visit anywhere in the world virtually is very cool.
(I appreciate this thread is for the pro but still relevant)
I can see lots of people shrugging that off as same people, same problems.
I'm still enjoying the Quest 2 though. It was really useful for losing weight a while back (I used Fit XR to do HIT routines). These days it mainly gets used for things like "I expect you to die" and I just completed "The Last Clockwinder".
The Q2 is my second headset after a Rift, but I can't personally see me stumping up more than either of those cost so the pro is out of the running for me.
If it wasn't academic in my case anyway, yup, that'd include me.
They may have ditched the requirement to have a FB account but if it's still the same company, or part of the same group, I just don't trust them not to be tracking and aggregating data on me anyway. Unless given convincing evidence that they aren't, my attitude is rather that you can dunk a skunk in a bath of Chanel No.5, dress it in a silk shirt and plonk a tiara on it's head .... and it's still a skunk. Be careful how you treat it, and where you stand, lest you get .... Facebooked.

Off topic I know but was clockwinder good? I was really tempted but have about ~7 other games to play I've already purchased and with game pass on the xbox/pc having dozens of 'I want to play titles' I've held off for now.
It was a nice low paced problem solver. Sometimes a little irritating, nothing exceptional, but I enjoyed completing it. The puzzles can be completed to three levels, which I never got past level 2. Level one progresses you to the next puzzle, three just seemed irritating.
Indeed.
It''s usually the same with "free" services products ... the exception being things like Open Source projects. With those exceptions, it's the choice offered by the age-old adage - if you can't see what the product is, you're the product.
The issue, I guess, is if it's a trade-off you're willing to make? I'm not, but I guess I'm in the minority. Where it gets especially tricky is smartphones, which is largely why I shied off having one at all for so long. But, it's now a question of who you want abusing your data - Google or Apple? But that's another whole thread ... which has been done to death, I'm sure.
