    BBC and ITV on freeview

I have just got myself a freeview box for the first time and I have a question...

I bought it because I want to watch the liverpool games on ITV2. I switched to ITV to see what the Chelski score was and the Rangers game was on. It seems that in England they showed chelski and in scotland they showed the rangers game.
Is there any way to select which region to watch?
I've heard you can do it on sky so can you do it on freeview?

im pretty sure the answers gonna be no. in wales you can only get the regional channels and you cant get the english channel regions, or even normal s4c on digital you get s4c digital instead. on sky you get all the regional bbc channels i know but we never had regional itv on sky. try pressing the red button on bbc you can change sports matches i know by doing this.

As we're on the subject, what are peoples opinions of Freeview - is it worth it?

nope. if youve been watching the news today (maybe theres a thread?) the analogue switch off is due to be announce d later, its gonna be in three years starting in scotland. in my opinion you only get about four chanels your ever gonna watch and its not worth the money.

    No.

The sky satelite covers the whole of the UK at once, Sky broadcast all the local channels because they have plenty of room on the satelite for them all. When you subscribe to Sky they setup which will be your local channel by putting some data in the viewing card but anyone can view another local channel if they like. For example channel 950 is BBC1 East Midlands.

On Freeview there is very limited room for channels, and it is broadcast from local transmiters, so each transmiter carries the local channels for that area.

If you realy want to see local BBC channels for another area, you could buy a second hand sky box & dish from ebay or the like, and then watch local BBC chanels without a viewing card. It won't work with ITV though, as their content is encyrpted on satelite.

you might get the other game on some random channel, otherwise no.

freeview is worth it imo, what, £40 one off for better quality, more channels etc.. bbc3 and freeview alone are worth it, let alone men n motors

I think it depends on what signals you receive. I live in Cardiff and get the best signal for BBC West but can also get BBC Wales channels which are someone in the 800's on the channel list. ITV on the other hand I only get the HTV West one. I can not get HTV Wales.

I do think Freeview is worth it if you don't wnt to pay for Sky. E4 alone is woth the cost of a cheap box. If you get a suitable box you can get topup tv which is £7.99 a month and give you 11 extra channels such as discovery, uk gold, eurosport and TCM. I did have topup tv when e4 was on it but I don't think its worth the cost now e4 is free.

Defintely. Freeview receivers are cheap, too (£40 upwards). Remember that analogue's goign to be switched off in time anyway, so you'll need to go with Digital Terrestrial ('Freeview') or Sky, cable etc.

Freeview is localised because it's transmitted from the same masts as your traditional analogue TV signal.

Depends on which transmitter you are recieving from, and which box you have. For example when i was at home I had different regional ITV and BBC channels to choose from - the other regions were 'hidden' in the top end of the channel list but they were there. I have a basic ferguson box (no card slot).

If you have a PC freeview card then its easier to sort out as the software lets you work out and choose which transmitter to lock on to, and from what we could tell messing about wiht my mates one was that different transmitters carried different regional options.

I got myself a freeview box with hard drive which I use like a vcr and pausing live TV while you pop the kettle on is great IMO freeview is worth every penny.
Just one payment and no monthly subscriptions.

    Major thread reserection gitto.

I don't think a reply be sooty would be very useful as there is bound to be a lot better and cheaper units by this time, the thread is almost two years old after all.

Anyway, sooty hasn't been online for almost a year anyway

Freeview PVRs: Humax and Topfield are considdered the best, but have a look here for loads of others: http://www.pvruk.co.uk/

Thanks for that - I guess I should look at the dates more carefully! As you can probably tell I'm new to this. Thanks again.
