    Important Announcement Regarding YOUR images

Due to the recent devious exploits of certain national daily publication houses... I urge everyone not to post full sized images on here, or for that matter on the net. It seems these people take your image and assume copyright (and credit) entirely for your hard work.
    scum.
That said, to the trusted hexus members, I'm sure arrangements can be made should people express particular interest in another's images. Sorry to be an arse on this but as more and more people say how good people's photographs are, the more we need to be sure not to effectively give away what could fetch you a pretty penny, rather than the thieves who may nick it.

So, don't post full sized or links to full sized images.
Post at no more than 800x600 pixels and less than 200kb.
If you want a member's image PM them and request emailing a copy, its then in their hands whether you get it or not (more often than not they'll be happy for you to have it.

So, is there any way we can protect our images by copyright? Not that anyone would want to steal my piccies.
    Not around too often!

I'm pretty sure you are protected by default, but that doesn't stop someone from just taking an image they find online.

hmmm...this might be a good idea.

    Photoshop users tip:
In PS CS/CS2 you can copyright your images in the file browser/bridge.
its quite easy to do so check in the help files, basically you select one image (single click) then fiel>file info (in the file browser window not the main PS window, in the exif/meta data tag enter your copyright details/name etc then at the top right there should be a little arrow, choose to save copyright details. close the info box then select a number of images, then edit>replace metadata> [choose the copyright file you just made]

no. you're not protected, anyone can steal your images UNLESS you say on it somewhere 'copyright of...' etc, or hexus puts a sort of 'anti-right click and save' thing on here

Thats true you know, I would hate for my drawings to be taken as someone elses or something, eventhough its relatively unlikely to happen? (As my stuff are drawings, but photos are more subjective to being stolen)

since I do a bit of drawing too - thats been used for xmas cards - I'd hope no one takes those ideas either...

Yesterday the BBC showed a video of the kidnapped Briton in Iraq which had the link to a famous gore site plastered across the bottom in quite big writing.

Use deviantart, it keeps the image on record and it is automatically under copyright.

Is there an easy way to automatically add a logo (e.g. a signature) to all your pictures, and maybe at the same time add a black border (either in the GIMP or another free program)?

Incorrect, as part of a nice big debate I had today over people steaing a members photos from another forum someone kindly pointed this out...

    http://photography.about.com/cs/busi..._Copyright.htm

"You do not have to do anything to establish copyright in a photograph - all photos (except possibly some copy work) are automatically copyright."

It is however a good idea to post a reminder if you ever plan/hope on selling the image at all.

"Whenever you publish a photograph, particularly on web sites, it is a good idea to use a copyright statement, such as '© John Brown 1999' on or near the work as a reminder."

Good Idea - yes, Legally Required - no.

Anti-Rightclick can be passed if you hold right click down when it appears, press return to get rid of the dialog box, and release right click - then the menu will appear...

lol Sorry bit off topic, naughty me ;P

Another easy real-world way to make sure you're protected is simply to take a copy of your work, whether it's a photo, drawing, manuscript or whatever, put it in an envelope, and take it down to your bank. They won't mind date-stamping it, and holding it in your account for you. that way, if anyone tries to challenge your ownership of it, all you have to do is collect the banked copy, and have it opened in front of a good witness.
