    Wot TV for £500 - £600

    Right,

Your mission should you choose to accept.

I need a TV for between £500 and £600 (that is a fixed limit imposed by the wife !)

It doesn't need surround sound, I have a stand alone Home Theatre set up.
    It must be Widescreen.
It doesn't need to be digital, I have Sky Digi for that.
    It must be Silver.

Other than that, the rest is up to you.
Do I need 100hz flicker free? You tell me?
Prefer a brand name, not a Sainsbury's own etc.

I'd prefer something over 28"/32" as I am upgrading from a 24" Sony Widescreen.

    Thanks,

    Lee.

By all accounts, Loewe are the daddy when it comes to TVs - especially at Empire Direct's prices!

The specs really don't do their products justice. It's the attention to detail, the picture quality, the sheer class of their TVs that does it. I'm sure anyone who owns one will wax lyrical about it.

If you want something a bit larger or flatscreen but still within your budget then I'd recommend either Philips or Toshiba. Both make TVs with superb image quality.

IMO, stear clear of Sony. Over-priced and awful colour reproduction.

As for 50Hz/ 100 Hz it's really up to you. Try to see 1 of each side by side. There's pro's and cons with both but personally i'd go for 100Hz.

I don't really no much about the technical side of TV's but i just trust my eyes and ears. Again, it's something you really have to see before you buy at the risk of sounding obvious.

set your crt monitor to 60 hz, have a use of it (maybe watch a film). now set it to 100 hz (maybe at a lower res) and perform the same task/watch the same movie again, see if it feels any different. note this wont work on a tft. i cant watch 50hz for more than ~an hour cos it gives me migranes but >80hz is fine. everyoens different. for the price you are looking at i wouldnt get 32" - go for a 28" of some sort. that lowe looks a good buy on specs and reputation

Flat screens / 100Hz aren't the be all and end all of TV technology to be honest. The Loewe 50Hz ones are sheer pwnage.

I myself can watch a 50Hz tv perfectly fine and not hate it/get headaches, etc.

Even after watching our 100Hz Panasonic downstairs I can go upstairs and watch mine fine.

But back to your question, the good manufacturers (in order I like them) to consider are:

    Loewe
    Panasonic
    Sony
    Toshiba
    Philips
    Home cinema: Toshiba 42XV555DB Full HD LCD | Onkyo TX-SR705 | NAD C352 | Monitor Audio Bronze B2 | Monitor Audio Bronze C | Monitor Audio Bronze BFX | Yamaha NSC120 | BK Monolith sub | Toshiba HD-EP35 HD-DVD | Samsung BD-P1400 BluRay Player | Pioneer DV-575 | Squeezebox3 | Virgin Media V+ Box
    PC: Asus P5B | Core2duo 2.13GHz | 2GB DDR2 PC6400 | Inno3d iChill 7900GS | Auzentech X-Plosion 7.1 | 250GB | 500GB | NEC DVDRW | Dual AG Neovo 19"
    HTPC: | Core2Duo E6420 2.13GHz | 2GB DDR2 | 250GBx2 | Radeon X1300 | Terratec Aureon 7.1 | Windows MCE 2005
    Laptop: 1.5GHz Centrino | 512MB | 60GB | 15" Wide TFT | Wifi | DVDRW

until you wanna play a game in 60hz or watch a region 1 dvd and it has to emit a high pitched whine to work at that frequency......

    How about a PANASONIC TX28PS12C.

It's less than £500 at unbeatable.co.uk and it gets a v good review from What Tv and Video - It get's B for picture which is a lot better than most, it has 100 mhz flicker free plus it's silver.

Check all the scores from 'What TV' plus the specs here (the prices are a bit high at Howsocheap but the info is great)

No difference in the pitch of the sound it emits when using 60Hz on my 10 year old Panasonic, I'm only assumign the Loewes are using more up to date and advanced manufacturing techniques...

I believe all Loewes are 100Hz these days anyway, the one I linked to is at least.

Agree with Aaron......most Loewe are 100hz...and they play 60hz games just fine

Can't fault my Loewe....not at all....beautifull menu, stunning picture, good enough sound (I use 5.1 seperately)

    Its just ace
