I was very fortunate to find a Audigy2 ZS Platinum Pro for cost.I've had it for a day now and the first 2 DVD-Audio titles I picked up were Yes-Fragile and Deep Purple-Machine Head being an old hippy that I am..heehee.Along with the Logi Z-680's I must say I am staggered at how wicked cool it all is.Having a TON of fun so far trying it all out but WOW....once I tried the DVD-Audio on it I was just blown away. The selection at our local Best-Buy store here is pretty darn decent and the retail for most on average go for about $25 a disc which really isnt that bad considering the sound you get from each one.
A really well worth it investment for anyone wishing to move into this kind of set-up.You will not regret it at all.
Yeah the Z680s are pretty damn good multimedia speakers. How much did you pick up the Audigy2 for?
I see we have another American member here

My DVD player plays DVD-A/SACD, I've never bought one though. I doubt there's much out there that I'd normally buy and if I did that then ripping the music for my iPod could be extremely problematic.
More US members......yes....bring it on
Nice thread mate

Think you'll find normal CDs would sound a hell of a lot better on proper hi-fi kit. It's like trying to connect a thousand pound DVD video player to a 14" portable via composite video and claiming the picture's better than a £300 player connected to a 42" Plasma! You'll notice far more difference with better speakers.
Thanks fellas.....but I am no American.....I AM CANADIAN!!!,,,,you know....remember us....the colonials.....(smile)
thanks for your annoying Sig there Zath...(it's one of my personal favs as well)
Picked the card up for about 300 CDN or 194 Euro's or in your case 135 pounds...and it is just outstanding.
The availability of a pretty good selection on DVD-Audio disks is fairly decent here where I am at and they all go for about $25 Cdn on average.
I don't think I know of or have heard of a proggy that can rip a dvd-audio and convert it's ripped state to keep the same quality but why would you anyways?? They all come in about 5 different formats anyways with each disc but the 5.1 surround sound is thee quintessential.
They are incredible(only going to use ONE adjective to describe it....too many "totally awesome's get's old fast)
Heh, and you can still rip it easily as OGG supports 5.1 channel audio.
NS
rarely use it.....only used it once for nascar racing...but thanks for the info.....wierd isnt it that the format is good for that but never is used much for anything it sems.
Howard...I meant to ask you how you like your motherboard?
I couldnt find that particular one here quickly enough and settled on the ASUS equivilent. That mobo caught my eye for the features on it and I still might get one altho I'm quite pleased with the A7N8x as well.
It's you again
I assume you're talking about the NF7-S? Well tbh I haven't actually got it yet, I updated my sig yesterday accordingly, but it should arrive tomorrow or tuesday.
I'll post a thread when I get it, either raving or ranting!

Why not just rip the AC3 stream straight out? Ok, its uncompressed but you have AC3Originally posted by NightShade737

I dont like sig pics so i turn off sigs Which doesnt help when i dont know what ive written here! DOH!
AC3 is compressed! Maybe not to the extent of MP3 etc but it most definitely is compressed. DVD-Audio usually carries two or three tracks: a PCM stereo track, a DD/DTS encoded track and a discrete uncompressed multichannel track. To get the full potential, you need to link your multichannel hifi to your DVDA player using three stereo analogue interconnects instead of a digital lead. With DD/DTS you won't be getting the full quality of the sound: it'll be CD standard at best albeit multi-channel. For low-end (read under £500) hifi equipment you won't be able to notice too much difference in the same track placed on a CD and on a DVDA, what's usually changed is the editing for the DVDA to make it sound 'better', usually compressing the dynamic range and repositioning tracks across the 5 channels. This is why people swear the Queen DVDA in DTS sounds better than the CD version, even on computer speakersr... it's nothing to do with the superior format.

Can you make your own DVDA DVD's? Ive tried looking for Ac3 encoders on sourceforge but they are all pre-alpha and i suspect its cause dolby owns the copyright or something
I was gonna transcode a CD into AC3 and stick it on DVD to see what it was like, although i cant even find the option for DVDA in nero :/
