Heh, yeah - Ive had the 16 channel one for a bit although I sold it i favour of the Mackie ONYX. Wasn't hugely impressed by the preamps - they arent bad for starting out but when your used to Audient and RME preamps they dont really cut it, heh.

The windows drivers can be a little dodgy - especially if your using a 6 pin to 4 pin cable (for a laptop for eg), but when I briefly used it on a mac they were very reliable - even plug and play

Hmm I'm interested in getting my first low-end home studio mixer with a itty bit of kit (software can do the majority of it for me ) Are you guys able to recommend a few? I am still a tiny bit clueless about how gear links up... I got a book on it which I am still reading through, haven't got to that bit yet though

As talked about earlier the Alesis Multimix Firewire mixers are very good, although if your aren't so bothered about number of connections then the presonus low end cards are probably better.

Using a firewire mixer it allows you to capture each channel independantly, whereas just using a normal mixer then feeding the 2tk to your soundcard you'll only get a stereo input (and probably lower quality depending on how decent your soundcard is).

Dont forget when starting up your own little home studio that (at least at the ultimate budget end) mics make a great deal of difference to the quality of sound. So budget in for a couple of nice mics

    Yo,
cheers Black Dwarf, just about to get some active monitoring and I'm deciding over:

Fostex PM 04 great price and has the right connections I need:
    http://www.gear4music.com/pimages/large_pm04.jpg
    http://www.gear4music.com/Studio_Mon..._Monitors.html

Alesis M1 520 looking cool mid price range of the three:
    http://www.rs100.co.uk/images/m1-active-520-1-L.jpg
    spec:http://www.alesis.com/product.php?id=29

This would be the best but we are talking 1 year intrest free ground at 399 a pair.
Genelec 8020A the bees knees but cost three times as much:
    http://www.gear4music.com/pimages/large_8020a-s.jpg
    http://www.gear4music.com/Studio_Mon...or_(each).html

I do dig the Alesis, im a sucker for the blue light lol I can get the Fostex for 99 and the Alesis for 170.

hmm a friend of mine owns http://www.inta-audio.co.uk and he always reccomends the fostex over the alesis for that sort of price range. But if you can really stretch to it the genelecs are the dogs knackers. Also if you can stretch to £230 the Tapco S5's are a good way to go, theyre basically owned by Mackie, Very clear, perfect for mastering.

As far as monitoring goes its normally best togo for classics!

I would steer clear of the Alesis' - try looking at the Tannoy Reveal series, I use the 8Ds but I have used a pair of 5Ds quite a bit and they are brilliant - amazing trebble response and great imaging, just not so hot on bass (but then no small cheap monitor is going to be).

good advice fellas, the Tapco range by Mackie looks really interesting.

I've got a pair of the M1 520's coming tommorow which I'll put through there paces and compare to a set in my local pro recording studio with my man chris who worked with the Police no les. If they don't impress me I'll simply swap em untill I get the pair that deliver the best for the £200 odd

Can you still get Spirit Absolute 2's? Awesome bang for buck, used em for years.

Oh and regarding mixers, save up for one of these:

Looks like the soundcraft spirit absolute series has all been discontinued, however there are a few of them knocking about on ebay.

Seriously Unreal for £199 inc vat on the 8-track MultiMix firewire you can't go wrong fella, they rock with pre amps, phantom power for condenser mic's and 100 24bit onboard effects

    check it: http://www.alesis.com/product.php?id=40

Edit: you will need to dig for that price however.
