cheers, yeah was trying out a different way of processing my images, just messing really, and think it cames out pretty well. one thing I do need is an effective way of converting to b&w, now I can work in 16bit (rather than 8) the image shouldn't pull apart as badly, need to find a way so I don't get nasty halos everywhere...

The second one has a smidge of something in the background with detracts from an otherwise very clean shot. But that could just be my monitor, which is a touch too bright.
As for B&W, try converting to lab colour and then selecting the lightness channel. You have no control over the output but it gives very very smooth results - and of course then you can make further adjustments.
you mean on the left above the leaf in focus? yes...I might burn that area out to leave just the subject...as far as things go I haven't done much point editing, more just the global type. cheers for the b&w tip, I'll give it a go this evening.
