    Help with AV Receiver/Speakers

Hi, I got a Mediagate MG-350 multimedia streaming thingy for Christmas and was thinking about getting some hi-fi kit to play it through.

I don't have much room for a 5.1 system, so I was looking for a decent quality budget AV Receiver and similar speakers to suit.

I've had a look on Richer Sounds, and they've got this:

    Any good?

If you are going for a home cinema amp and attempting to run it as a 2 channel setup, you would be better off getting something with a little more power - something like this as it will give you a wider range of speakers to choose from.

That with some decent Tannoy or Monitor Audio Speakers should give you a formidable start to a home cinema system (should circumstances change to allow one )

    Cheers.

Actually just seen that Richer have JBL Control 1s for £50! They were legendary when I was in short trousers, seems a good price...

Just seen this at Richer, how does it compare with the Sony?

It's a bit more £165 on Empire Direct, but it's £150 at RS

Would in that case be tempted by this, which includes that amp and some speakers which would be good for home cinema, then get some other speakers on the alternate output for music. Floorstanders perhaps, all depends on budget. That package comes well regarded generally anyway.

i was planning on getting the yamaha 359, as i heard it was a good buy from Richer. Unfortunately, they didn't have any left so i came away with a slightly more expensive denon 1507, which does 7.1 instead

that home cinema package looks good though

Hmm, that seems like quite a decent package. Only issue would be space. I've got some thinking to do...

Anyone know a good site for getting reviews of the amps mentioned here?

Spent a few nights reading that thread I can tell you - and I still can't decide.

    Smudger, a question for you ;

I see you are in the UK, but I've only seen this Mediagate 350 available from the States (on eBay). Is that where your's is from and if so did you have to pay import duty when it was brought into UK.
It seem a reasonable price (especially with the USD rate at the moment), but would like to know if I'm going to get stung by customs ?

    Cheers,
    Mark

I'd avoid Sony's - I owned a Sony Receiver a few years ago & it went wrong on no less than two occasions.

The Pioneer 1016 is the same price as the Sony 1200 (I've got a Pioneer AX3 receiver & it does the job I want with no probs )

Cant comment on the Yamaha as I've never owned one in the 20 years I've had a Home Cinema

I got the player as a Christmas pressie from my brother in Australia. My folks brought it back when they visited him just before Christmas. Not sure how they dealt with customs...
I should imagine if you ordered from the states you wouldn't have to pay local tax on it, but would have to pay UK VAT on it once it's in the country. Unless it's labelled as a 'gift'. Not too sure about this, someone else may know more...

OK, thanks for the reply. I might wait a little longer to see if they start importing it here.
