I liked the beginning scene, before the title sequence, most of all I think. Gives a nice background into it, etc. Trying not to give away anything to people who haven't seen it

I'd cut the nauseating ending by 10 minutes and use that time for something on Saruman on or near the start.
Fantastic film.
but the nausiating ending ishow the book ends (Well not the very end but close to it) and it HAD to be done, to show the hardships frodo faced when leaving to the undying lands.
There was a collective groan from the audience when you'd thought it had finished but it carried on to Sam's life. Most people couldn't wait to get out of the place.
It's a fitting ending to an excellent trilogy, but it pushes the audience to the point of distraction.
most of my audience sat threw the credits..
But that was because they were waiting for you to get up so they could see you properly
never thought of thatOriginally posted by luke313

I thought it was a great end to a great trilogy, maybe the bit with sam going home to his kids was a bit gay, imho that should have shot that seen when sam was an old man with all 13 of his kids, and you shoula seen Gimli crowned and go sailing with Legolas. but thats just me
I was quoting a completely different film, the animated version. HOnestly.
Anyway, you won't get a better film than this.
we got the groan at our place too
thought the battle was rather 'done before' ie. oh no, too many enemys, oh no we are all dying, oh no they are thru the walls oh look we have support, oh no everything was alright in the end.
i mean *really*. twice in one trillogy?
didnt really like it all that much. i felt the way they flick between storylines kinda spoils it a bit, cos each chunk lasts ~10 minutes, so you kinda forget about the other storyline and it looses all the tension that had built up. quite a few twists before the end.. also thought the owls were a bit crap... without reading the book (which i havnt) theres no explanation for them at all.
3/10. boring, repetitive and dull.

5lab this is the Return of the King thread mate, you posted in correct forum?
the owls are eagles, and they came to aid gandalf again after rescuing him from Sauraman. reasd the hobbit and the LOTR books and the film we seem much better
yeah but the books are bigger than my whole computer rig, and weight about 200tons. How many people who have seen the films have actually bothered to read to books? I think a very small proportion.

AGREED THERE TOO.....and there is NO WAY that LOTR should have done so well in the TV series "The Big Read" if not for the film. I know people worship and adore it, but in my humblest its not worthy.
Frankly....and I've said this before, I prefer the films (1st two so far) A LOT MORE than the book. I hate elven poetry and Tolkien went on and on...... and I was MUCH MORE a Dragon Lance (Tanis, Caramon and Raistlin) and a Magician (Pug and Thomas) man in my reading days.
For me LOTR films do it ALL and blow my head off MORE than the books...
To encapsulate my feeling ......as I sat in the cimena for Fellowship, and the Shire came into focus and was green and lush.....I cried only a little tear, but a tear.
And it happened again when I saw the 4 disk DVD set.....
I am now awaiting a very hopefull 4 disk set for Chrimbo of Two Towers to refresh my mind BEFORE going to the cinema for the Return
