Question Films Set in the Future

Is there any reason why the cars in films such as Gattaca and Minority Report, and the environments in Brazil (to a certain extent) look old, even though the actions taken in the films and the story is definiately from the future?

Or is it just because it's too hard to imagine what everyday objects are going to look like in the future, so they use old ones? In Gattaca especially, the cars look like the ones driving around in Mafia.

maybe thats how the concept artist saw cars etc in the future... id say it's hard to imagine what everday objects are going to look like. so in the end, its however you see it!
