Computer wont start up after installing 1gb ddr 400 memory

    Hi,
Finally ive got my new memory. 1gb ddr 400 mhz CL3 memory slot. Im using a sony vaio RS720G computer. I have 4 slots in my MOBO. 256,512,256,empty.
Today I tried to put in my new memory. after installing the memory i swiched on my computer. The computer ran fine till the VAIO and the INTEL PENTIUM 4 pics were shown. Then when the windows should load up the computer restarted him self and put me into the safemode message. I chose the safemodde. I saw some drivers booting but then the computer again did restart..... i put out the new memory and the pc booted fine. MAybe the 1gb stick wont work with 256mb stick??? Any sujestions?????

    Thank you.

Try the 1gb stick by itself. Also, just to be clear, are you trying to mix the 1gb stick with 3 others?

No, you are most likely not going to get that combination of memory running, I am actually surprised to see that the 2 x 256mb ran combined with the 512mb. Your system is configured to run the memory in dual channel. You should add the memory in pairs of EXACTLY matched sticks. I would suggest that you get a 2nd stick of the 1gb that is EXACTLY the same as the first. Use those 2 in the slots that your 2 x 256mb originally came in. You can try adding the 2 x 256mb to the 2 x 1gb in the other 2 slots but it may not be stable.
