It happens a lot..
Anyway unless you have an X58 platform there is no reason to go for 3 pieces of memory it would be counter productive as you wouldn't have a platform equipped with a triple channel memory controller, most people will tell you to stick to matched kits of 2 or 4 in this case which restricts you to 8GB or 16GB sets, if this applies to you then reading the older replies should actually answer any questions you may have as they still hold true.

As long as you don't plan on editing a film while playing games, then I think 8GB of ram should be just fine I have always been playing new and demanding games since I made pc my main gaming platform some years back. I don't think I've even gone over 6GB of total being used at any time. I don't really think there's any games out there yet that are asking for more, or much more than 4GB. With 1.5 - 2GB free left spare for the os and security apps, you should be pretty comfortable. Having 8GB leaves more than that, and is just fine at this point in time
just get 16 .. it's cheap enough and you can do ram drives and all sorts with it ...
What does it matter now if men believe or no?
What is to come will come. And soon you too will stand aside,
To murmur in pity that my words were true
(Cassandra, in Agamemnon by Aeschylus)
To see the wizard one must look behind the curtain ....
In my opinion 8gb is enough for pretty much everything... better to get higher quality 8gb than lower quality 16gb.
From reading the original posts.. I wish 16GB ram was still £70!?!?!?!?! dafuq has happened to this planet?
Prices doubled on DDR3 a while back, the memory kit I'm using now cost me £60 but now its being sold for £120, ive also noticed a shortage of low latency memory kits for sale.
Either they just cant get the yields they used to while manufacturing DDR3 or a new kind of memory technology is coming...
ram prices are the most unpredictable i've ever seen out of any hardware. they shoot up and down at any given time. i don't really understand the logic to it. if you're considering getting some, then get it as soon as it's cheap cos it may be way more expensive a week later!
RAM pricing has always been very volatile. It changes faster than the market price on fresh fish. DRAM pricing can literally change almost daily and it is completely determined by supply and demand of the DRAM chips. Low supply and high demand equals high pricing.
The Hynix fire caused some of this here recently.
well there we go ay. prices do vary often by significant amounts often as you say. it's usually one of the things that ends up creating tough decisions for me when putting together a new rig. ram prices will partly determine how good the other components i buy are going to be. i love it when i get lucky and ram is on the cheap at that time though
Depends on your current RAM usage. If its a lot then go for 16gb if its avarage go for 8gb
Unless you are running memory stressing applications that can use all that ram like rendering and video editing, it isn't worth it. 8gb is the sweet spot imo.
