    IS DDR2800 worth it?

    Hi All,

I am planning on buying a new PC soon and will have to make a decsion regarding the amount of DDR2 that I plan to buy.

At the moment will definetly be getting 1GB but my main query is either to get DDR2800 or DDR2666? Is there a large performance difference between the two? Can overclocking be affected by slower RAM?

Thanks in advance for any advice or tips you may have for me.

It really will depend on several other factors as well. So.....

    1. Do you plan to OC, and if so, what is your goal?
    2. What MOBO, CPU, and cooling will you use?
    3. Do you plan to use XP, XP64, Vista, or other OS?

    Thanks for replying.

Plan to OC an Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 from 1.83Ghz to around 2.4Ghz

Here is the rest of my future PC spec:

    MOBO: Abit AB9
CPU Cooler: Arctic Cooling Freezer Pro 7
OS: XP for the next 6 months, then onto VISTA

E6300 at 2.4ghz = FSB342. If you want a 1:1 OC (which I would suggest) I'd go for some PC6400C4 or even PC6400C3 if you want to splurge. At this time, IMO, 2 x 1gb is the ONLY way to go for memory, especially considering Vista in the future.

Thanks for the info. At the moment will be hanging on with XP for the moment as I am on a budget for my new PC. But can get the extra RAM when I upgrade to VISTA.

Can I still achieve that OC target of 2.4Ghz with 1GB of DDR2666???

Could probably stretch my budget to getting this Corsair RAM:

    1GB CorsairXMS2, DDR2 PC2-6400 (800), 240 Pins, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 5-5-5-12

Will this do for that 1:1 OC target?

Well, remember your FSB above, 342mhz. DDR speed at 1:1 is FSB x 2 so you need to hit DDR684. So, some DDR667 would hit very close. Your choice of memory above is not bad with the PC2 6400 but, I'd suggest you get 2gb of memory. Have you priced the Value Select 2gb kit of PC6400? If you plan to run at DDR684, VS 6400 is perfect and you may be able to get 2gb instead of 1gb wotjom upir budget.

If you were going for a clock of 3.3 - 3.5 on an E6600 - would you still be able to keep the timings of 4-4-4-12 (for the same RAM model and rating but lower latency ones)
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

True but, if he's working within a budget constraint, the 6300 is a better buy clock per clock, especially when OCing.

My budget for DDR2 RAM (1GB) is around £90 at the moment. Later in the year I can afford to go with 2GB for VISTA, etc Can you make any recommendations with that budget?

Well, as a Corsair rep here at Hexus, I can make memory recommendations etc but, I do not make recommendations on resellers. I would suggest that you post with the resellers here at Hexus and link them back to this thread or, have a look over their sites and see who offers the best price.

ahhhhh Silly me! that my post should have had a question mark on the end of it. But it seems that your reply was an answer to it?

E6600 has a multi of 9. So "IF" you can run as high as FSB342+ you will be at 3ghz+. And, using a 1:1 or possibly even 4:5 the memory should be able to run CAS4 assuming you get the right stuff. However, fast low latency OCing memory is not in the current budget for this thread.

Well I am thinking of going with:

    1GB CorsairXMS2, DDR2 PC2-6400 (800), 240 Pins, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 5-5-5-12

If I go with my OC target of 2.4 GHZ for the Core 2 Duo E6300 with an FSB of 342 x 2 = FSB648. Wouldn't the memory above be able to handle that with an FSB of 800?

The 2GB Value Select is still too much for me to afford at the moment.

    What do you think Yellowbeard?
