New PC

Hi

My PSU recently fried my motherboard from the 8 pin supply I saw smoke rising & smelt burning. I cant check what is working I only know for sure the PSU is dead, but I'll hazard a guess the motherboard and cpu has gone. PSU was a Corsair HX620.

So what should I get? I was hoping to wait for ivy bridge before my pc died. I did have a i5 570 but socket 1156 boards are harder to get hold of and no grantee my cpu is still working.

I was thinking maybe a i5 2550k or 2500k is there any difference apart from price and slightly higher clock? Whats a good motherboard and will socket 1155 be upgradable to ivy bridge?

Also What PSU?
It will be powering
1 ssd drive
3hdd
a gtx570
and HD tuner card.

The thing about the PSU recommendation is that people here generally recommend Corsair as one of the good brands. I have several in various PCs around the house.

There is a Corsair support area here on the forum. I would ask what to do about the PSU in there, see if they have any suggestions (worth a try, nothing to lose).

Thing is, you can't really tell if the motherboard died and took out the PSU, or the PSU died and took out the motherboard. But if the motherboard died, then the PSU should protect itself, but chances are only Corsair could really tell for sure if it is safe to plug it into another motherboard.

How old was the PSU?

Ok thanks PSU was 3-4 years old I will rma it and either keep the replacement or flog it I think need to upgrade it. I like corsair for there customer service but this is the second psu from the go on me but just unlucky I guess.

Have you tried hotwring it while having a fan connected to it??

Yeah I hot wired it turns on and off with hotwire. I think its toast, I just hope it didn't toast my mboard and cpu too.
